Was listening to the isolated tracks of this and John’s guitar has a real relaxing oceany floating feel to part of it which really suits the theme of the song, the backing vocals are gorgeous, the bubble effects are so much fun to hear, and the watery effects on the vocals during the solo are so cool. For a song they could have turned out in 5 minutes they really pulled the stops in making this a fun song.

As most of you know by now, I Ringo’s voice.
mmm, you mentioned in another thread recently about the others singing “happy and we’re safe” in response to Ringo’s use of “they’re”. That really does stand out in the isolated track. It is a nice touch!
If fingers can smile, I think John’s fingers were smiling while playing that song. It is so lively.

As noted in another thread I was listening to “Love” last night and this song really made a fine impression. I know that some of the folks here are not convinced by Ringo’s songs but it seemed perfectly in place last night and I have been humming it all morning since.

The story behind this one is Ringo on a boating trip hearing about how octopus hide in the ocean. He likened it to his hiatus from the stress going on the band. He came back with this gem. Ringo didn’t have a lot of songs, but the few he sang defined his character very well. It’s a song with imagery, some meaning, atmosphere, color, quality lyrics, and overall very fun.

It’s my favorite part of “LOVE”… the whole production of it.
The song takes me back to my childhood so it has a special place in my heart, anyway. I was at a beer-and-wine reception before one of the All Starr shows, where Ringo came in and greeted everyone. I had time to briefly ask him if he’d be doing “Octopus’s…” and he winked at me and said no. Because he already does “Yellow Sub” and he “can’t do two ‘water songs'”. Haha!

How much of this song was written by George? The original version (as seen in the Let It Be film) is quite different to the finished piece so did George do the rest? Some people say that he did. Any ideas?

As far as I know George helped structure the song and with the lyrics and then all four pulled together in the studio to make it into a fine band recording.

My only downside of this song is the redundant “s” after the apostrophe.
(Maybe that’s British grammar and I’m just American)
The ‘s’ after the apostrophe is not redundant at all, it’s the correct usage. The rule is generally that it is written how it is said aloud. So:
Octopuss’s Garden. Correct
Prince Charles’s bald spot. Correct
Albert Camus’s books. Incorrect
The exception is biblical names.
The incorrect usage ( “Dickens’ prose” etc), is a bad habit that stems from journalism (to help lower word counts), that has become so common that most people now think it’s the correct form.

Fingers can definitely smile. Mine do every time I play ‘Something ‘s guitar solo perfectly.
I concur with everything mmm said in post 1… such a great atmosphere this recording has. Perfect underwater sunshiny happies.

Since Octopus’s Garden is one of the only Beatles songs to have lyrics appropriate for a 4-year-old, its been recorded by a number of childrens artists. Here are the ones I could find

Does anyone else think that these people do a better job at the song than Ringo?

The problem i have with these covers is that they brush over the best part of the song, George’s amazing guitar playing. The Little Mermaid gets close by including the intro but they feel the need to swap out the guitar solo with horns and scat singing.

I’ve always liked Ringo’s singing. I’ve also always liked this song, and I’d prefer to hear the author sing it anyway.
I remember that Sesame Street version though, I thought it was pretty cool at the time. To compare any of those tracks with the Beatles though, is a little silly.

That’s not some jokey, garage band playing on Octopus’s Garden . The production, as usual, is top notch but there’s a lot more going on here on what is basically a novelty song.
It deserves a lot more credit then it actually receives.
