The only things left to come are studio outtakes.
I can think of several immediate possibilities for non-studio outtakes given a little bit of Giles’ stardust with pulling contributions from a missing member from elsewhere:
Strip out non-Beatle contributions from the multi tracks and you have
- Sour Milk Sea – combine George demo with original
- It Don’t Come Easy – add George demo
- Oh My Love – John and George with added Paul and Ringo contributions
- I’m The Greatest – Paul record a contribution
Plus there’s enough Get Back session stuff that could be beefed up.
But, I can only dream of a new album

Ah, thanks. I’m not familiar with John’s song at all, only played it a couple of times.
I’ll listen to the new single later today…

Just heard this for the first time. Amazing how clear it sounds, especially compared to Free As A Bird and Real Love (they should redo those tracks with the new technology). I’ve always thought this song was rather dirge-like, but it’s appropriate considering it’s the final Beatle track. It might go well on the White Album , a similar feel to Long, Long, Long . Fantastic to hear John and Paul singing together again, that’s priceless.
Did George or Ringo contribute any vocals at all, I couldn’t tell? I’m guessing not, from what I’ve heard?
In fact, I wasn’t sure where George was in the track, but for a once through listen, that wasn’t my focus. I heard on the short documentary on the song that they released, that Paul put some slide guitar in as a tribute to George. So I’m assuming that’s Paul playing the slide lead at the end. Got to be honest, doesn’t sound like George’s tone at all to me, but whatever. I thought it was interesting that Paul wanted to put in some slide when in the Anthology days he thought that George’s slide was too identified with George’s solo material to be in a Beatles song. I always thought that the Beatles would use anything and everything in a song if it fit.
Anyway, that was my initial reaction to my first listen.

What a beautiful beautiful homage and honor to John and George. Of course it’s no classic 60s Beatles and more like late John one. But damn just knowing all 4 contributed to this is worth it. And it sounds amazing. I was at the gym when it dropped and listened to it 7 or 8 times. Was nearly crying through it!
We have to thank Paul for going the road doing this. He fully embraces his Beatles legacy

Chrimble has come early!!!!
I honestly feel so ecstatic in the moment I’m writing this to be alive, 21 years old, and listening to a brand new Beatles song released today. Definitely the highlight of my year!
I will admit I was a little taken aback at first by the absent “I don’t wanna lose you” section (my favourite part of John’s original demo, even if unfinished lyrically – it would have been cool if they still used the melody and chords from that for the guitar solo or maybe as an instrumental bridge), as well as Paul’s shaky old man voice being so prominent in the choruses, but after several more listens, the new structure has really grown on me and I now find Paul’s fragile older harmonies are quite moving.
Eternal thank yous to Yoko, Sean, Olivia, Dhani, Jeff, Sir Peter, Giles, and of course, the lads for their parts and amazing work in bringing this song together!

It’s very sad and tragic that John and George’s life were cut short. I think John especially would have softened on his Beatles stance as he got older, now he and we will never get to experience that. But Paul makes a fine advocate for their legacy, and I’m pleased that he had the enthusiasm to want to finish this track.

I don’t think they will. They’ve already said NAT is the last song, Paul and Ringo are getting old, and it wouldn’t look good to put out some additional tracks in the coming months or years. It’s done, finished, this is the full stop. The only things left to come are studio outtakes.
Give me “Carnival Of Light ” or give me death.

I love it! I can so imagine John coming into the studio with this demo that he’s worked on at home, then Paul orchestrating and mixing and pulling all the strings to actually make it into a track. It’s a beautiful use of new technology, and I just know John would be thrilled.
To be honest the guitar solo was a bit of a let down. Just because it’s slide guitar doesn’t make it “in George’s style”. But I guess it would be impossible to mimic completely and I will always wish George was here to record it himself!
I was worried about the mash up of Beatles harmonies from other songs (and there are some really obvious Because harmonies about 3:00 mins in) but in general I think Giles pulled it off.
Off to listen and watch the 12 min doc and cry and repeat until death.

I’m pleased they omitted “I don’t want to lose you, lose you or abuse you” as it’s clearly not a suitable lyric, especially with social media being so volatile.
I think ‘NAT’ will grow on people in time when it settles into it’s position in Beatles lore, just now it’s too fresh and new. Personally, I really like it with the track working well: it’s clearly been done with a lot of love, thought and care throughout it’s creation.
In comparison to the 90’s numbers it certainly improves on those, tho I do prefer the ‘1+’ ‘Real Love ‘ reworking which is incredible.
And whilst this is being billed as the last new Beatles song, I doubt it will be. Sadly, I think this is Paul and Ringo’s last but in a decade or three I can see the Beatles kids or great grand-kids giving permission for ‘Sour Milk Sea’ or one of the other songs listed earlier in this thread being reworked. Like with all the ‘Halloween’ films and all the rest that are brought back, the Beatles brand is too strong, the legacy too powerful and the money too tempting. Technology will have moved on as well.

Was this intended to be a Beatles song? No.
Would have it been a Beatles song if John lived? No.
But circumstances changed and it is now a Beatles song, even if I’d never view it as a pure Beatles song with direct involvement in the studio from all four at the same time, back in the day. I don’t have a problem with releasing this though. Now And Then ’s story spanning the years until its release is extremely interesting and has shown the band is still popular with the #1 ITunes result.

I think it will sit fine with ‘FAAB’ and ‘RL’. As stated above by different people, I would like Apple to go back to those two tracks like they did in 2015 for ‘1+’ as the technology is there to improve them again. I do love that ‘Real Love ‘ but ‘FAAB’ still sounds like John’s vocal has been mixed into a separate backing track (tho they will never be able to fix Ringo’s drums which are so dull – but I understand why that is).
For me these three will never sit beside the original 60’s (and 1970) body of work anyway due to John, and now George, being dead. Same as with the BBC and ‘Anthology’ material and all the post ‘LIB ‘ albums. The core catalogue is set as ‘Love Me Do ‘ thru to ‘You Know My Name (Look Up The Number)’. You also cannot compare ‘Now And Then ‘ to ‘She Loves You ‘ or even ‘Hold Me Tight ‘, the dynamics are vastly different (even tho I would rather listen to ‘Real Love ‘ over ‘Hold Me Tight ‘). But others will and that’s fine.

I really enjoyed it. They’re saying that George contributed backing vocals. Does that meanthe signature “ooohs” and “aahs” came from the 90s sessions? They were my favorite part, and sounded the most like the Beatles. Can’t beat it honestly, the way it shoots back into the main theme, with added elements of rhythm guitar and a little syncopation in the piano.
Bless Paul’s heart, he wanted to tribute George with his slide solo, I really respect the attempt but George is one of the greatest slide players of all time in terms of feel and phrasing, and I mean no disrespect to Paul. It does the job nicely but theres no confusing that solo for one played by George.
I’ll have to listen again, (and again and again) but George’s parts are really fantastic on electric guitar and backing vocals. I’m really glad they dusted off the old sessions. Not only is it a nice song from John with super clear vocals, but getting to hear some more of George’s work with the Threatles is the biggest treat of all.

I think all backing vocals came from ‘Here, There And Everywhere ‘, ‘Because ‘ and ‘Eleanor Rigby ‘, George in there 90’s is there only thru playing guitar (acoustic and electric).

It’s so great that this song reaches number 1. Beautiful. They deserve it.
It must be amazing to feel all that love, respect, admiration and affection after so many years. Feeling that what you did at one stage of your life is still so valued. And it will probably remain so for a few more decades.

Makes sense that it sounds the most Beatley. I heard Because clear as day. Still its a nice touch and does work with the song really well.
