Are we back in 1963? What is the ‘Official Big Top 40’? The official UK singles chart #1 is currently Taylor Swift’s ‘Is It Over Now and runs until the 9th November. ‘Now And Then ‘ was only out on Friday.

Apparently Now And Then out-streamed Is It Over Now since its release so there reason to be optimistic it could overtake the no. 1 spot.

“In its opening weekend, Now And Then outsold the rest of the top five combined, according to the Official Chart Company.”

In short, early signs are that it WILL be Number 1! beatlemaniacs_02_gif

There have been plenty of songs that early on outsold others only to be overtaken just before the final numbers were totaled; ‘FAAB’ may have been one when it lost out to Michael Jackson’s ‘Earth Song’. It’s nice to see ‘NAT’ do so well.

What is the ‘Big Top 40’ and how can they compile a chart which includes songs that were released three days ago?

I did think the video was a little creepy – but it still made me cry.

This topic has 13 pages.  Pages 13 back to 10 all contain reactions to Now And Then .  Page 1 contains buzz about an upcoming possible Now And Then .  Not sure I want to go plodding through pages 2-9 to find the page where forum people register their first reaction after they saw it. (I also was hoping for a good link, which may be buried amongst pages 2-9…)

Now today I find, you have changed your mind

Well I finally saw it.  Some reactions:

The song is rather mediocre, but I can tell it would have been much better with John singing it alone with maybe a simple piano accompaniment, bass, and drums.

Paul’s voice sounds remarkably good, almost youthful, and unlike what he has sounded like for a few years.

The video itself is kind of paradoxical:  it’s simultaneously —

poignant and in poor taste;

playfully irreverent and vacuously post-modern;

a touching expression of the spirit of The Beatles, and a mischievously narcissistic flaunting of video technology capabilities.

Leaving me ambivalent.  Which isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

The “I don’t want to lose you” part does something important for the melody too. It is a shame that it’s missing.

It’s something the demo builds up to and makes the song feel more complete, rather than lyrically repetitious. I think it comes down to the Beatley tone they wanted to achieve, making the song a tad faster than the original and introducing more ethereal vibrancy, rather than John’s mournful lament.

Wow, The Beatles are back on the charts. Amazing. Is it a dream?

I looked at the charts on Shazam, 13th place in the world, 9th place in Berlin, 10th in London and 10th in Rome

Although it would have hit the charts anyway

Which is similar to ‘Help !’ as John saw that as being slower and years later expressed his dissatisfaction with the more upbeat Beatle arrangement.

I think John would agree with the change here though. Now the song is more about universal grief and loss than John’s own personal struggles, and people don’t have to remember him as lamenting his “Abuse”, whether he meant it that way or not.

A touching aspect is how Paul adds his vocals to parts of John’s vocals that needed it. “I want you to be there for me.”

I’ve been listening non stop for days, and it’s a real grower. Thanks Paul and Ringo for doing this, with a little help from their friends. That instrumental segment really is awesome, and makes me happy about being a Beatlemaniac. It feels like finished business.
