So, lets try to move on from this rather ugly disagreement and focus on the joy that has been this week, shall we? What are your favorite reactions so far?
t=2s
Lars really knows Beatles lore inside and out for being a fan for a shorter time than some of us, and their reaction here is essentially what mine was! It’s great.

I think the song itself is a true grower, it gets better the more I hear it.
I have no idea what the CD cover is about, there needs to be more to it as otherwise it’s just awful. The kind of cover amateurs would throw out of a computer in the early days of bootlegs.
The video has some good moments (the 90’s studio material, the end montage section, even Ringo’s drums being stolen was alright and I didn’t mind John looking out over the other three) but there are also parts I really dislike. I don’t need or want to see Ringo and Paul nowadays singing whilst George and John from 1967 stand beside them pointing and making stupid faces as it looks terribly naff and poor; the technology is getting better but it’s not there yet and it really shows. I get why it was included (for one, Apple need to have the Beatles having a laugh together as “THEY WERE BEST MATES ALL THE TIME. OK!!!!!!! THEY LOVED EACH OTHER!!!!!!!!!!”) and many watching on will love it, but not me.
But I have the song to listen to without having to watch the video so it doesn’t matter. I don’t watch the other reunion videos much either. And I do really like the song.
I’d love to see more of John’s home videos from when he was on his break and from the 90’s sessions but I doubt we will. I don’t really understand why tho, well maybe the home videos as that personal but why can’t Apple put more out.

I would say that its much better to remember the Beatles that way. At the heart of it, they really were just overgrown kids all the way, whether they were fighting or not. Its not propaganda to distill it down to that IMO, especially with Ringo n Paul being so old now. The song’s about missing a loved one. When you do that, those are the times you think of. Paul’s not going to remember John for How Do You Sleep, and thats the way it should be.
(This isnt about the video, im just saying I dont think it was a case of “BRANDING” – I know paul and Ringo do remember things too fondly, but i really think they genuinely feel this way as older men missing their brothers.)
As for the picture, I knda get it: Its very 70’s John. Very minimalist and blunt. Now, the clock on the back is the cool part! It was bought by George in the late 90’s and when Paul called Olivia to ask if he could work on Now And Then , She just so happened to be looking at the clock as he called, which says “Now And Then ” on it. Paraphrasing, she said “I think George is nodding his approval!” 🙂

Okay, lets not say the reason they like it is because they’re essentially ignoring it. That’s a bit much.
I don’t mean that people are necessarily ignoring it, but that they’re viewing it through a different lens. I’m sure there are also people who genuinely don’t see any problems with the quality. I’m not trying to devalue your opinion.
But, I will say I don’t think its fair to call this song “Just” a tribute as if it means nothing. it damn sure IS something. It’d the last “New” thing from all four we will get and its setting the world ablaze right now. It deserves what its getting. It deserver’s its place in history.
I said it’s “mainly” a tribute because it is. That wasn’t at all meant to put it down. I like the song. I was just pointing out that the FAAB video was made to serve a different purpose.

obvious deep fakes
I’m still shocked by the super fake George (I think it’s supposed to be him) that pops up at the 1:42 mark.
It is him – he went on solo holiday to US in 1963, and stopped off in New York: 16 September 1963: George Harrison holidays in America | The Beatles Bible
What you have is George’s own colourised Super 8 footage. AI still doesn’t get this quite right for faces but sharpens up ropey old b&w generally
Thank you, @Old Soak. If LPD, MMD or anyone else remains unconvinced, here are two videos regarding George’s visit to the US in September 1963:
George and his brother Peter went to New York, staying at the Pickwick Arms Hotel at 230 East 51st Street. At 15:43 in this video, there is a photo of George in the same location:
George bought a new cine camera especially for his trip to the US, and used about 25 rolls of colour film during the two weeks.

But it makes sense to me that Paul would want to have another crack at it, and I do like what they did with the finished version.
It does make sense that Paul would want to finish the song, but why? Probably because he’s a workaholic, because it has personal meaning to him since it appears John is singing to him, and maybe because he saw more potential in the song than George did. Not sure which would be the most prominent reason.

Isn’t it obvious? Now And Then was always seen as the one that got away by himself and Beatlemaniacs alike. Now, with technology on his side, he can do it! Simple.
More than that, think about it from his POV: What has happened the last few years?
All things that years ago, all of us thought would quite honestly never happen. It’s clear what’s going on: Paul is fully aware of how old he is and he’s in “unfinished business” mode. He’s slowly if not unconsciously tying up all the loose ends. Making sure everything that’s still able to be done can be done while he’s alive and in good health. He wants no regrets – not that he should have any. He could leave this world right now and no one would doubt The Beatles’ legacy was taken care of quite well by him and the rest, but while he and Ringo are still around, he wants to keep working. Keep celebrating. Keep bringing The Beatles to new fans in exciting ways while still keeping as much integrity as he can. Better he do it than a few sucessors down the line, right?
Honestly, we all cry and moan about Apple for one reason or another, but when I look at all the other big legacy brands, I still respect The Beatles the most. I genuinely believe that whatever missteps the releases may have taken over the years, Paul has always thought “Yeah, this would be fun to do!” rather than “What sells”
It’s like John used to say : “The Beatles can afford it” – If it fails, it fails, but generally all Paul wants is to make us happy, and thats WAY more than I can say for a lot of bands. Even certain ones with flashy biopics that came out a few years ago.
By and large, I am immensely inspired by Paul. He always DID say he wanted to finish it, and darn it, he kept his word. We’re more blessed to have him and Ringo than we will ever realize until they’re gone.

And just like before, The Beatles obliterate what the Stones are doing. LMAO
Just like the Beggars Banquet release party, Hey Jude /Revolution got worn out before they even got to side two of the Stones album, and Beggars Banquet is a really great album. Nowadays the disparity in quality is much much larger.

When I was listening to Now And Then for the first time in full, I was thinking how beautiful it was. Everything about the song is stunning from John’s wonderful voice to the strings and the backing vocals. I also love Paul’s count in.
The mini-documentary and the music video were both very moving as well.
John and George may be physically gone, but they will always live on in our hearts and minds. We are so lucky to still have Paul and Ringo with us and I’m so happy in 2023 that this song is out there in this wonderful world we live in.

Nice! Heartwarming…
I’m not gonna pretend that its my top 50 of Beatles songs, nor even top hundred…but for their final single to become a final #1 is gratifying indeed. (I’m reminded of Wayne Gretzky in ’99, playing his final game before retirement, and assisting on a goal, to earn one final point in his own legendary (hockey) career full of records that will never be broken.) And this Beatles follow everyone will surely delay Taylor Swift and Drake from equaling them in that category by a few years, or maybe forever, who knows….
A music-blogger friend was also campaigning in favour of this one final pop-toppermost hit achievement, days ago; and his piece is still worth reading (like most everything he writes), even after the outcome is no longer in question

Are we back in 1963? What is the ‘Official Big Top 40’? The official UK singles chart #1 is currently Taylor Swift’s ‘Is It Over Now and runs until the 9th November. ‘Now And Then ‘ was only out on Friday.
