I have so much to say about the music video, but at the same time, I’m at a loss.
Almost everything about it is horrible. The only saving grace is the new vid of them in their leather phase, but even that cannot assuage the downright desecration this video is to the song. I am honestly in shock that they allowed this to be released.

I think the missing part (pre chorus, bridge, or however it’s called) was a key element in how the harmony evolves. Taking it out is a bit of a disapointment though i can understand why they did it. They could have used it as an instrumental section or something though.
I agree it’s a shame they couldn’t have included something of the missing part. But it does make for a shorter, punchier song by taking it out, and thus a little more Beatle-like.
As for the video, I liked it. The older Beatles interacting with their younger selves was surreal. My only complaint is that they were too heavy handed with John’s goofy dancing.

Man, you better not see any Beatles music video ever! Shield your eyes, they have fun in them!
I loved it. It was everything a REAL Beatles music vid is/was!

I have to say I love the video, but the bit where old Paul and Ringo are in a line with young John and George I completely lost it. Very, very powerful. Peter Jackson is on record as saying he didn’t originally want to do it as there was no new footage – they found some unreleased stuff to build in, on that basis alone its a treasure trove.

The song is called “Now And Then ” and its a celebration of everything that was “Then” inn the “Now”! Brilliant. I dunno what people were expecting. RL and FAAB are there for your sappy moments. This is a HAPPY goodbye the way John & George would want.

I’ll probably wait a day or two for Sir Peter’s video, so I can have some visual accompaniment to maximize my own personal introduction to the LAST BEATLE SONG (or the third and final* “John Lennon + The Threetles song?). I dont know what it’ll be like – It might be heart-breakingly perfect; and it may also be a heartbreaking failure. Or somewhere in between. But whatever eventually I think about it, I’m happy on behalf of every Beatlesbibler who ends up loving it.
Finally listened (and viewed the video), twice. And then played the song again on streaming, with no pictures, upon learning that it’s significantly longer*.
*(EDIT: No It’s not)
And It’s OK.
I like it.
I like the video too. (Was amazed to find that moving images exist of George’s visit to the Empire State Building, on literal top of the world in Kennedy’s America, top of the pop world in England, and totally anonymous in Manhattan. For another 3-4 months, anyways)
Do I think it’s one of the great Beatles works? Absolutely not. And so what? The Beatles’ proper recording career likewise began with a sIngle that was pretty low-key and pleasantly enjoyable (followup “Please Please Me ” being their first real rocking masterwork), so it’s appropriate that they bookend that career with another modestly successful work, and chose to put the two back-to-back on this last single.
So in conclusion, despite all my grousing upthread, I don’t dislike this single at all!
(Oh, and as for the ’60s samples that I prematurely objected to…well, I think I recognized a guitar bit from “Something “, but didn’t hear any of the 1966 vintage samples; my failing headphones currently only play through one speaker, so I can’t give it my normal kind of deep close microscopic listening.)

Yeah, not feeling too sure about the video myself, the A.I. embellishments get a little too obvious and icky in places…but to give it credit, I did enjoy the sequence of them dancing around in Capitol Studios, as well as seeing the very brief leather-era footage.

The general reaction seems highly positive – for example, in terms of YouTube ratings and comments.
I think Peter Jackson has done a great job with the video.
All things considered, I’m very pleased with both the song and the video.

I know that clip has been around the net for a few years, but its existence still astonished me – discovering a scrap of moving images of the band even earlier than “Some Other Guy” at the Cavern; *and* it’s in colour; *and* they’re in leather and ducktails instead of Beatles haircuts and collarless suits/ties!! Amazing…
(I believe some YouTuber has looked at the brief glimpses of John’s and George’s hands and fingers, and suggested that they might have been playing “Nothin Shakin’ But The Leaves On The Trees”)
We all owe gratitude to Pete Best, for allowing this clip to be utilized (and I have to laugh at the tragicomedy of poor luckless Pete, once again: The only known footage of the band during his tenure…and he’s off camera throughout! So I’ll put him right here instead Thanks Pete!

Haha, sorry Matt, no; looks like I was totally wrong about that! I saw a timing display of 6-something minutes when I gave it my first Spotify listening, after having first watched the video twice, and noting that the video was in the 4-minute range. What I was seeing was Spotify’s total playing time for the entire NAT/Love Me Do single, which is indeed in the range of 6+ minutes.
(Plus I was further confused by internet commenters yesterday, speaking of how bits of John’s song were edited out, the bridge or something…anyways, ignore that entirely. Song is about 4:08, video is 4:35 with the preparation-intro, song is unchanged.
Paul: Yeah well… first of all, we’re bringing out a ‘Stamp Out Detroit’ campaign.

Personally I prefer the song to the video but no doubt others are happy and that’s enough to be ok.
I find the song to be very catchy, I’ve listened to it a few times and it’s good enough to not be fed up already. It will sit nicely in the catalogue.

The track turned out well, so it’s happy in that sense. I’m very glad we got it. But I’ve always thought the melody to this song was one of the saddest sounding that John, or the Beatles for that matter, have ever come up with.
I remember when I was a youngster, I used to think Yesterday was a very sad sounding song. Which I guess it is.

Presumably he was well compensated for use of the footage. I’m glad that Pete gets some nice residuals from the Anthology album and whatever else he might get. There seems to be a lot of disagreement about his net worth, but clearly he’s comfortable. I bet there aren’t many musicians who have been released from a band before they hit it big who can say the same. Unless they were independently wealthy to begin with. So good for Pete.
