I’m so intimidated by Mother Nature’s Son and Blackbird , even though I’ve played guitar for years, I don’t even want to try them out! I should take a look at them…
That’s a great idea, you should absolutely try it! When I learned Blackbird , I was very intimitated as well and after the first day I thought I’d never make it because I just didn’t get this stretch in my fingers and all the chords in my head. But by only attempting to play it for half an hour each day, within less than a week I managed to play it without any stops or mistakes.
Therefore, don’t let any problems that might occurre at the beginning discourage you, if even an unexperienced guitarist like me can somehow cope in the end, you’ll definitely do an awesome job if you try! I wish you a lot of fun with these picking gems of Paul.
@Beatlebug That sounds like a beautiful experience. And it reminds me so much of the story in which George wrote Here Comes The Sun in Eric Clapton’s garden.

Beatlebug, Pineapple RecordsNot once does the diversity seem forced -- the genius of the record is how the vaudevillian "When I'm 64" seems like a logical extension of "Within You Without You" and how it provides a gateway to the chiming guitars of "Lovely Rita. - Stephen T. I second @Martha’s thoughts on Blackbird . Once you learn the finerings and start playing through it, you’ll naturally get better and better. I was really daunted by the solo on Something , but yesterday I said to hell with it, and I learned it. To my surprise, it wasn’t too bad once I decided to just sit down and play it!

As it happens @Martha I also played Here Comes The Sun and I thought of that too.
I concur with all of the above. Something isn’t that hard to play, it’s just hard to play with as much finesse as George did.

This was an ALMOST perfect song. The Music and Lyrics are beautiful.
Unfortunately, Paul didn’t leave well enough alone.
I could have done without the Brass and the drums. They ruin the peace of the song for me.
Paul singing, playing guitar with another one dubbed on and tapping his feet.
The only blemish for me is in the first line of lyrics. Aren’t we all young when born? But then, he is Paul McCartney and I’m just a schmuck posting about him on a Beatles fan site.
I love this song with or without the accompaniment. It’s nice to see so many of you playing it or at least attempting it. You are fine stewards of The Beatles legacy.

Paul was being very clever when he plucked the albsolute crap out of the low E string after the intro. It reminds me a lot of Michelle another song that people on this forum find boring, but I find absolutely captivating.

I really like ‘Michelle ‘; Paul’s vocal and the harmonies are superb.

What I’ve always loved about this one (and I think I prefer it to “Blackbird ” too, although it could be just that “Blackbird ” is more of a ubiquitous standard, and so I need breaks from it) is what I perceive as words/delivery and music at odds. He’s singing lyrics that are peaceful and serene, and he sounds quite untroubled, but I find something a little ominous in what’s behind him. @Flyingbrians ‘s “mysterious” is probably the closest to what I feel about it. It’s always made me feel that nature can be beautiful, but it can also turn lonely and even threatening. (The survivors of the Donner Party, for example, would have had a lot to say about that.) I don’t even think it’s what Paul had in mind when he wrote it, because he’s a pretty sunny lyricist, but nevertheless it’s what sneaked in, in the harmonies and the way the song is scored. It has shimmering sunlight and yet shadows as well, and a strange noise or two in the night. And then Martin’s brass ends on a flatted seventh, which is not exactly where the ear think the song is going.
The beginning of this song was used to set up the White Album section of the documentary The Compleat Beatles (which I used to have on VHS, and regret I’ll probably never see in whole again), and it really does have a “trouble’s coming” quality to it. The narration stresses the group coming apart, fighting, the erratic quality of the resulting set, et cetera.

I never see a darker side to it. It’s just comes across to me like Paul’s hankering for a simple life away from all the crap of the time. Heart Of The Country is a similar sentiment. I like almost all of his slightly soppy ballads! I agree that it’s fun to learn on the guitar too. 🙂
Apologies if I have already posted this elsewhere.

When I was quite young, my Mom used to constantly listen to the album “An Evening with John Denver”. One of the first few songs is Mother Nature’s Son . I didn’t realize it was a Beatles song until I was old enough to discover them myself.
