Whenever I hear these particular kind of Paul songs, i always imagine John thinking to himself “i wish I was in The Rolling Stones”.
John would no doubt be pissed off with Mick’s poncing about after 2 minutes and either walk or be kicked out.

Count me in among those who love this song. One issue discussed briefly somewhere above, whether this song is “intuitive” by Paul or too labored, I find that distinction to be tangential to whether a song is inspired or not. To me, this one is. I can detect an uninspired effort by Paul almost immediately upon listening. Maxwell’s Silver Hammer is not one of them.
Interesting additional info offered by various contributors in the comments above (I went through all 3 pages).

It’s an alright song, but I’ve never been that huge on their goofier songs. The arrangement, guitar solo and use of the Moog is excellent however.

He seemed a little haggard, but it did not slow him down,
he was humming to the neon of the universal sound.

I’ve always loved this song because of the story that Paul paints about the troubled Maxwell. The juxtaposition between the cheerfulness of the song and the lyrics always amused me.

It’s a good song but probably my second least favourite on Abbey Road (I actually prefer it to Octopus’s Garden ). In terms of Paul’s granny songs it’s definitely better then the likes of Honey Pie …

Adding some recordings from the ‘Get Back ‘ sessions and on one performance of ‘MSH’ (DDSI #7.57) immediately after Paul sings “he creeps up from behind” John pops up with “yeeehooo”. Gave me a very good laugh.

Which DDSI do you have, @meanmistermustard I have the 2007 one which may not coincide, but I’m guessing it’s the one with the roll announcement.
I'm like Necko only I'm a bassist ukulele guitar synthesizer kazoo penguin and also everyone. Or is everyone me? Now I'm a confused bassist ukulele guitar synthesizer kazoo penguin everyone who is definitely not @Joe. This has been true for 2016 & 2017 but I may have to get more specific in the future.

As far as I know, @ewe2, it’s the most up to date and is DDSI 7.57 – John’s comment is around the 1:25 mark (the full track running 3:17).
Edit: I’ve compared the DDSI numbers I have to Sulpy’s 2007 book and they are slightly different; mine are based on his 2001 book which correlates with ‘A/B Road’ so no idea where the change came or how to amend my files. I haven’t bothered with the ‘Get Back ‘ sessions for a long time and had no idea the DDSI #’s had been altered. It’s one hell of a work to sort it out and then get it laid out properly in my iTunes.

I too have A/B Road with out of date DDSI numbers, I’m not sure exactly at which point it diverges (for instance it’s only a divergence of 2 on the 7th but was at least a divergence of 4 on the 6th). http://www.jprg.co.uk has what they call nDDSI numbers that they renumbered for some of their bootleg lists.

I’ve been doing a lot of iTunes sorting recently trying to remove duplicates I have of takes and consolidate my collection a little bit. Going through and resorting A/B Road? HELL NO. Messing with those track numbers in a 2,000 + song collection would be an absolute nightmare.
I’m pretty sure my Get Back rehearsals aren’t organized by DDSI at all. It apprears to be sorted by slate and track numbers. If I really want proper DDSI I would rather just find the proper sorting and re-download rather than sort it myself.

Slate 115, Roll 9… is the one. After re-checking my library I see the DDSI numbers appear after the tracks and mine and yours correspond. I guess this is outdated afterall.

I think Sulpy has placed a handful of previously spoken songs/discussions/jams together to create a whole (‘A/B Road is not 100% complete so maybe the extraneous material has allowed for such a chance) and it’s moved the numbers up by one or two. I don’t think it justifies 47 years of re-sorting the files, I’ve got far better ways of wasting my time.

Best quality video I can find on youtube. Although the whistling totally kills the pace of the song and they were right to discard it, I really enjoy this performance. Very creepy to have carefree whistling on a song about a deranged serial killer going around killing anyone he decided should be at the receiving end of his murderous whims.

— a milder example, perhaps, of the chief “Droog”, Alex, breaking into song with “Singing in the Rain ” whilst he and his hooligans were in the midst of raping and/or generally terrorizing people in A Clockwork Orange.

I like the music hall harmonies there! If you play this song on ukulele, the feel is obvious.

Wow, that song just got a hell of a lot creepier. I dig the studio chatter though George nattering on about the ‘saaound’ of the bass, and Paul forgetting/scatting the lyrics

Why does Maxwell kill Joan? He asks her on a date, she agrees, she’s getting ready, he kills her. There is no motive. It may very well be his first killing so why ask her out and then after she agrees, kill her. At least be rejected.
The teacher gives him 50 lines, the judge is about to sentence him for multiple murders.
