This has been one of my favorite moments in the entire Beatles catalog for almost as long as I can remember, and I wonder if others love it as I do.
On the stereo Please Please Me album, John flubs the lyric of the title track at 1:27, singing “Why know I never even try, girl,” and then there’s a little laugh in his voice on the first “Come on!”
To me, this is a precious flaw loaded with charm. It doesn’t detract from the album, but actually enhances it for me, humanizing the band and testifying to the insane recording schedule. I’m certain John cursed himself, and the band must have hated “screwing up” the title song and centerpiece of their debut album, but decades later I wouldn’t have it any other way.
Do you love it, too?

I dig that moment too, Brian. As was being discussed a week or so ago, these flubs only give the song’s charm and reveal personality. It’s the laugh John makes as he continues on with the song that I like the most.

I also wanted to say thanks for this link! I know what I’ll be doing for the next few weeks, as if I needed another reason to obsessively listen through the Beatles catalog! 😉

Dylan has a lot of those moments too. That personality is part of the reason people get so attatched to artists like Bob Dylan and The Beatles.

It’s perhaps these errors which allows us mere mortals to remember even our idols aren’t always perfect.
