I’ll be the first response here, and mention that I love the call and response with the “yeah!”s. It feels so frantic, in a good way.

A fantastic opening to an album if ever there was one. As soon as the song starts you are carried off on a wave of excitement and the joy throughout the song is so contagious, especially when John sings “you’re coming home. You’re coming home!”.
It’s these kind of songs that blow me away with the Beatles; most bands would have killed for a track as strong and catchy as this for a single yet the Beatles only had it as the opening track of an LP, it wasn’t even shoved out on an E.P. like ‘All My Loving ‘. And they never played it live, all we have is a mimed performance on ‘Ready, Steady, Go’ – and by golly did they struggle to mime to it (tho it is four months after it was first released in the UK).

Love this song – it’s the highlight of WTB, if you ask me. All those “yeah!”s – it’s almost as if they were defiantly proclaiming themselves the kings of “yeah yeah yeah music”, as their brand of rock n roll became derisively known to some establishment folks. As if “She Loves You ‘s” 10 “yeahs” per chorus weren’t enough – let’s do a song with 14 of ’em!

I love this song – mostly the mentioned part “You’re coming gome, you’re comin’ hooooomeeee”.
I also like how the WTB starts with this song, (well, let’s say they all sing together on this one), then comes John with All I’ve Gotta Do, then Paul, then George.

Love this song – one of my favorites. Whenever I get a new audio device, this is the first song I play on/through it for testing the sound. IMHO, one of the most underrated song in their canon.

One of the write-ups on ‘Blue Jay Way ‘ (i forget who by) was that whilst “please dont be long” was in relation to dont make George wait too long before folk arrive and he’s asleep, it was also a message to the hippies, drop-outs, kiddies etc of the time to not be belong to the (whats the right word) authoritative people of society/older generation* as a whole.
Whether thats true or not is another story.
*I cannot think of the right word.

The Establishment? Should this be in the Blue Jay Way thread? or am I missing something?

It was in relation to the ‘it wont be long” post you made. More similar word play.

Heh I didn’t notice this wordplay either. But I always noticed the same wordplay in Blue Jay Way ! I’ve always read it as George feeling that he didn’t belong. I think that’s why it’s a sad song for me.
The interesting thing for me with It Won’t Be Long is that the lyric here is sung from the girl’s point of view, something that most boys probably miss. The clue is that you hardly expect John to be good as I know I should

Now I'm a confused bassist ukulele guitar synthesizer kazoo penguin everyone who is definitely not @Joe. This has been true for 2016 & 2017 but I may have to get more specific in the future.

Agree with all of the above. I’m surprised that it’s pretty much disappeared; most likely due to its never having been released as a single. Let’s see where it ends up on our song ranking.

Daily Beatles Song Review Day 19/213: It Won’t Be Long
This is one of the best tracks on With the Beatles, which is an album that, compared to Please Please Me , has lower highs and higher lows; it’s more consistent, essentially. The best tracks aren’t as good as Twist And Shout , but the worst aren’t as bad as P.S. I Love You. I think this is probably my 3rd favorite. It’s got great vocals from John, Paul, and George, but especially John (who sings lead). The vocals repeat some of the tricks used in She Loves You with the backing “yeahs”, but I think it’s fine. The song is definitely worse than that one, partially because the slower moments aren’t great and feel like a drag.
The lyrics are pretty standard early Beatles romantic fare. It doesn’t have anything special but it also isn’t obnoxious or insipid, so that’s fine.
Instrumentally, this is also very strong. I think George’s lead guitar and Ringo’s drumming are easily the highlights. I love the riffs George does between some of the lyrics, and Ringo’s drumming already shows a step up from most of Please Please Me . From Paul, there’s also a decent bassline. The bass part is definitely better than most early Beatles tracks, in which the bass is often the weakest element. Production wise, on With the Beatles, George Martin completely toned back the echo effects that dominated the past album, which is a huge relief.
Score: 8/10.
Favorite cover: There’s a pretty good garage rock cover by the group Black Lips.

Brilliant song to the point where I was delighted it featured in full during the ‘Anthology’ TV series. The yeah’s are reused from ‘She Loves You ‘ but in a different way so it’s not boring and there is so much energy and joy thru-out the song, especially when John sings “you’re coming home”.
It would have been a good single but there is no doubt ‘SLY’ was the right choice and this is a great album opener.
It’s also pleasing we have a clip of them miming to it.
