I find it interesting that, for this song, John wrote the lyrics;I’ve got every reason on earth to be mad
Cos I’ve just lost the only girl I had
And if I could get my way
I’d get myself locked up today
But I can’t so I cry insteadYet, he laughed derisively at Paul for writing the lyrics in ‘A World Without Love’;
Please lock me away
And don’t allow the day
Here inside where I hide
With my lonelinessWas John creating a double standard here, or did Paul contribute the lines to ‘I’ll Cry Instead ‘? Thoughts?
I’m not quite grasping the “double standard” implication, but the “duality” here that jumps out at me instead (no pun intended) is the lyrics in which you didn’t boldface… Such a glimmering example of John & Paul doing what they did often… Mirror each other’s life experiences through one another yet, embark down two completely different pathways to achieve enlightenment… I must admit… I would’ve never spotted this one between two such unlikely candidates… Hidden in plain sight really…

As far as I can tell John thought the lyrics to WWL were corny (which they are) and a bit embarrassing. ICI was probably a throwaway that he didn’t spend much time on, but that verse isn’t nearly as cheesy as WWL’s.
Agreed… but another clear difference is in their respective vocal delivery… Paul gently soothes with the “corny” lyrics whilest John’s performance at times borders on drawing blood… His rhythmic chopping (“slashing” perhaps more appropriate) of his writings remind us why he so often was portrayed to have “belted out” his songs when given the microphone… As usual, it’s Ringo who ignites this record into the raging inferno that John initially lights… John’s singing off of Rings here, I mean, what’s he doing now?! It’s not a shuffle yet certainly feels like one… The rhythm seems elementary enough, but not an easy one to duplicate in feel… Credit Robert Zimmerman for providing the raw materials here as well… It’s not just John who’s heavily under Dylan’s influence during this period but the other three as well… I say this for a lot of their records, but this is “up there with their best”…:-)

John wrote the lyrics for I’ll Cry Instead , but who’s responsible for the music (chords, melody, orchestration?). If John is (largely), it’s to his credit, despite whether some phrase or two may be thought corny. I’ll Cry Instead is to me clearly superior, but for reasons including not merely lyrics but the music of it overall.

I can’t find any recording with Paul singing his song…

There’s some debate on whether it’s actually him (there’s Peter & Gordon versions claiming to be “Beatles”) but this seems like the real deal… I’m sure that there’s a longer version out there but I can’t find it at the moment…:-)

It’s definitely Paul. The source of it is Peter Asher, who played it during his theatre show Peter Asher: A Musical Memoir of the ’60s and Beyond in 2013. Here’s Joe’s article about its discovery and unveiling.

Seems as though the “longer version” is a cut & paste job that’s fan made… It appears the demo is indeed only 30 seconds in length… Of note, there’s some swirlings about that the same DAT tape unearthed by Peter Asher also contains an early rendition of ‘I’ll Follow The Sun ‘, not sure if that’s been leaked out yet or not…:-)

The known demos that Peter Asher discovered:
0:00 I’ll Follow The Sun
0:59 World Without Love
1:27 One and One Is Two
Though, of course, it’s not the earliest demo of I’ll Follow The Sun , as it was among the home recordings made by John, Paul, George and Stu at Forthlin Road in 1960:

I can’t wait to listen to the songs Ron Nasty posted. In the meantime, back to “I’ll Cry Instead “. John does two cool things (among many) with his voice is when he sings it, both occur in the same line:
“I’m gonna hid myself away-hey, but I’ll come back, again some day…”
1. the way he goes up-down/up-down on the word “away”
2. the subtle slide down on the word “day”
