I was so sucked in by this song initially until I learnt more about George, he’s really playing against type here. It’s pretty much the last of that style of lyric by the Beatles, and it would have fitted well on Rubber Soul .

Always been my favourite George song off ‘Revolver ‘ yet often overlooked by others.
The lyrics are brilliant (George showing he could write to a high standard), the intro is fabulous, the handclaps spot-on in how they are utilised (somehow the Beatles never managed to overuse handclaps in their songs or make them distracting), the backing vocals perfect.

I’ve been listening to this song in “repeat” mode in my car , all the way from home to work (30 min.) and back. And it’s great because the outro fits really very well with the intro.
Interesting observation. I’ll try it out.

Don’t forget the tambourine! The drums always seem a bit mad, the snare is huge for it’s time. I also like the bass work here of course, it seems to stutter in sympathy with the lyric. I prefer the song in stereo form, just for the nice vocals.

I wouldn’t say that, @meanmistermustard. Just listen to Words Of Love .
But yeah, almost always…
and I love this song too. I always thought it was highly underrated–a real gem with those discordant chords (no pun intended). And the opening lines perfectly sum up how it feels to want to tell someone something, but not be able to find the words.
An interesting idea–what if he’d turned it into a love song? ‘I Want To Tell You … when you’re here, all those words they seem to slip away… Sometimes I wish I knew you well, then I could speak my mind and tell you–maybe you’d understand…’ just throw in those fateful words and voila! a Silly Love Song, something in the vein of Michelle .
Thank goodness that thought didn’t occur to him!
Who else here is a huge fan of Paul’s little Indian touch at the end? I eagerly listen for it every time.

I really like the handclaps in ‘Words Of Love ‘, never found them to be overused, so i stand by my comments.

Errr it is a love song, just not a conventional one where the word love is mentioned. Seriously, when I first heard it as a teen I knew exactly what he meant. The indian singing is a great touch, not only does it make the harmony less boring, but it allows an unconventional timing to it.
The only Beatle handclaps I find distracting are in It’s All Too Much , but everything is distracting in that song

I hate it. I’m sorry, but it’s the truth. My brain can’t handle the off-key notes, and I ended up kicking it out of my playlist….

i love those disonances both in the piano and the voices (not one single note out of key in the whole song, except for a couple Paul’s mistakes taking the highest notes ). Once again George taking the band one step forward into unexplored fields.

Dissonant, off-key… potayto, potahto. My ears experience it as unpleasant, no matter how you call it. I listened to it so many times, hoping it’d grow on me… but it never did. I love George, but not this song. And I think that’s allowed…

I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to come across quite as touchy as I did. I ought to have said that even though dissonant notes may not be out of key, they do sound that way to my ears.

Are you saying that It’s All Too Much ?
And JPM-Fangirl, I forgive you for hating it even though I love it… there’s no accounting for tastes, as they say.

There is only 3 Beatles songs I’ve ever kicked out of my playlist.
1) Till There Was You ,(just got sick of it), 2) Revolution 9 , & 3) Good Night
I Want To Tell You is a great song….
BEATLES Music gives me Eargasms!
