I like the Beatles version. Rolling Stones don’t have Paul McCartney singing the chorus.
Although the Stones do it better than Ringo does today.

I’m currently in a self debate over which version is better – The Stones or The Beatles? I love both BTW
They’re both great for different reasons. It’s like Derek and the Dominoes electric Layla versus Eric Clapton acoustic Layla.

Rerail the thread, quick!
I like this song, when it comes on I automatically start tapping my feet. It’s a great number to Twist And Shout to, as demonstrated in the club scene of AHDN .

Now of course, I never heard the original OR the Stones version first. I heard THIS version:
My dad bought us that album, which I believe is Can The Can, an Australian pressing that has unique songs. Terrific album, but what a dodgy-looking bad haha.

Did John or Paul ever apologize to the Rolling Stones for writing this song for them?
Or to Ringo for that matter?
I like the scene in The Rutles where Mick Jagger is talking about “Ron and Dirk” writing a song for them in about five minutes… “and it was horrible, so we never recorded it”.

I don’t mind that it’s no masterpiece in songwriting – it’s got a chant and a riff and s groove, and great rocking performances have been built on less. (I find the Stones version inferior overall, but give ’em full credit for turning the grunge and guitar volume WAY up, past where our boys had been allowed to.)

It may come as a surprise given some harsh criticisms I’ve made of other songs but I agree with @vonbontee, it’s a pretty fun song. It serves as a soundtrack of the early 60s and it’s pretty dancy. Also short, it knows it’s no masterpiece.

Exactly – just like Ringo knows he’s not the world’s finest singer, but still belts out those simplistic words with plenty of cheerful rocking gusto, especially on those BBC versions that meanmistermustardmentioned. (And I continue to be impressed by *any* individual who can simultaneously play rock ‘n roll drums while singing a lead vocal.

It’s a good rocking number, perfect for Ringo and proved to be a good boost for the Stones’ career. The Stones version version is fine, very different, but I prefer Ringo’s (both live and on the record).
It also inspired Jagger and Richards to write their own songs, which may not have happened if John and Paul had went off for a few hours to try to write something notable instead of disappearing for five minutes to finish ‘IWBYM’ off.

Jagger certainly doesn’t sing it with the personality of Ringo, and the straighter beat and slightly slower tempo (plus the lack of polyrhythmic decoration from tremolo guitar and maracas) force him to linger over the words a little more, which exposes how mundane and repetitive the words are. (Still love those nasty guitars though.)
