My mum had the early compilation of the Mamas And The Papas and their cover of this song was the first I heard of it, and it’s a great cover too.

Now I'm a confused bassist ukulele guitar synthesizer kazoo penguin everyone who is definitely not @Joe. This has been true for 2016 & 2017 but I may have to get more specific in the future.

More like the prequel, according to @Joe its an early Lennon composition. The solo has always been weird in both original and cover versions too. The live version of the M&P I linked above has a terrible solo but the studio version isn’t much better.

Great video, @Necko . Thanks much. This song fit nicely into Ringo’s vocal range. The backup band was passable as well.
Hopefully, Jim Keltner’s thwacking away satisfied @Bongo ‘s need for mucho mas cowbell.

I think Ringo’s version rivals the Mamas and the Poppas’. Ringo knocked it out of the park vocally, and the band really enhanced the arrangement. Thanks for getting that for us @Necko.

NeckoI say in speeches that a plausible mission of artists is to make people appreciate being alive at least a little bit. I am then asked if I know of any artists who pulled that off. I reply, 'The Beatles did'.

Great song. I like John’s “I’M NOT GONNA MAAAAKE IT, I’M NOT THAT KIND OF MAAAAAN…” part.
As for Bongo’s question, I think is another song (I was thinking maybe Eight Days A Week ?)

The US mono mix of ‘I’ll Cry Instead ‘ on the ‘AHDN ‘ soundtrack is a good bit longer than any other mix. It was recorded in two sections and then stapled together.
There are differences in the mixes of ‘ICYN’ but length is not one.

It is ,indeed, a great song for being an early attempt at writing.

ICYN has been stuck in my head for a solid two weeks now– I just love John on this song so much even if it isn’t his very best

^^^ Same here, and very much so. John was always so great at filling his vocals with such raw emotion and yearning once he really gets into it (it’s these kind of vocals that really make me just want to make out with him) It’s kind of a powerful statement in the lyrics too: “I never weep at night, I Call Your Name “– the speaker doesn’t feel despair just full-force passion and yearning….it’s a kind of a sexy vulnerability* They may be simple, but they’re effective in conveying the overall meaning of the song when combined with John’s great vocals.
I also enjoy George’s lead guitar work on this track a lot and the frickin’ ska section is awesome!
