As an enormous fan of this entire era of experimental Beatles music, I am not sure why I have never connected with this song. Along with SFF, is it often viewed as a crowning achievement of the era, and the band’s entire career. I really enjoy the intro and the bridge, and I like the electric piano and strings, I also dig the outro, so I guess its the verse and chorus that just doesn’t do it for me. It just doesn’t feel quite as masterful as Strawberry Fields, and like Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds , I enjoy some of the imagery, such as “yellow matter custard dripping from a dead dog’s eye” but overall I’m not captivated by the abstract lyrics and instead find them a bit meandering.

I don’t mean this as a dig on sir walter raleigh — I find his posts often interesting with insights I hadn’t thought of. (Here comes the “big but” bigger than J Lo’s) But this last post reminds me how subjective musical taste can be. It seems analogous to someone articulating why they prefer strawberry ice cream to pistachio; but maybe the musical subject sort of camouflages this and endows it with an aura of objectivity. At any rate, I disagree about Walrus.

I agree with that. Although you can be objective about ice cream; ie this flavor is richer, has chunkier toppings vs this flavor that is fruity, soft and smooth. Whether or not those factors relate at all to the quality is entirely subjective. Its the same with music, there are elements that you can be objective about, but whethere those are indicators of a good or a bad song is different depending on the person.
When I’m praising a song I find it easier to point to things like a lyric or chord change, and give an explanation for why I enjoy it. Its more difficult for me when criticizing a song, especially when im not totally trashing it, just milding stating its not for me. Definitely comes down entirely to personal preference.
