In my Klaatu essay I mentioned this song. My english teacher commented “‘I Am The Walrus ‘ is my favourite Beatles song!” needless to say, she has good taste.

It could be said of many songs, but I’m inclined to say this is John’s Beatles masterpiece.

Frank Zappa always called it his favourite Beatles song too; and he certainly didn’t have the highest regard for Beatles music (which didn’t stop him from choosing to collaborate with John and Ringo, of course.) His bands did tongue-in-cheekily cover “I Wanna Hold Your Hand” live occasionally, but “Walrus” he covered sincerely; no doubt he appreciated the extreme weirdness of the track.

Indeed. I say it could be his masterpiece as it’s undeniably him. He put absolutely everything into it when it comes to creating something weird and unique. Only he could have done it. When people hear it they usually keep quoting it for the rest of their lives, which is amazing for something so nonsensical. It’s how it all sounds atmospherically as much as anything.

I never thought of i this way before (and perhaps my perspective is skewed because I am a connoisseur of weird arty pop that I quote endlessly, to the complete bemusement/bewilderment of those around me – “You, you walk on past – your lips cut a smile on your face (YOUR SCALDING FACE!) To the cage, to the cage, there was a beauty in a cage…”), but you’re absolutely spot on with this observation. “Yellow matter custard, dripping from a dead dog’s eye” has lived rent-free in my head since I was eight years old, and if I walked up to any of my family members and said “Yellow matter custard”, they would most likely respond with “Dripping from a dead dog’s eye?”

Exactly. Even simply the title I Am The Walrus gets used a lot. I watched The Big Lebowski again after a while, and it’s there too. The lyrics are funny and just stick to our minds and never let go.

It’s one of those songs where it can be dismissed as tossed aside meaningless garbage but try and write lyrics like John did and you’ll find how hard it is. For George M to then write such a fantastic fitting score for it is ridiculous.
It’s a piece of genius and one of my favourite songs. Utter brilliance in its nonsense which somehow sounds like it could make sense.

BBible-newbie here who just realized you guys have a YT channel (lmk if there’s a dedicated YT discussion section), and loved learning more about one of their weirder songs with this. I think John’s voice suits them very well, cool to hear his inspirations and “writing process.” I really like how he doesn’t take his work too seriously, even criticizing how people claim he’s teaching about class warfare and whatnot. Not surprised to hear him question whether or not meaning was intended still makes for “real” poetry, esp with his line about how people read way too far into “artsy fartsy crap” (including his own work). And then the opposite happening as well, with “everybody smoke pot” turning a lyric that he did mean something with into just some fluff. Humble guy.
Also, tight editing on the vid too, already clicked sub 🙂

@quackman — Actually, I think that YT channel is not affiliated with Beatles Bible here, and the owner here, Joe, has had some issues with whoever that is using the same name. That was quite a while ago, apparently nothing came of it. It could be that a name of a website/blog/YT channel is not illegal to copy. In other words, I could write and sell a song tomorrow titled “Let It Be ” if I wanted to with no legal repercussions. Only if I copied the lyrics & melody, then I’d be in trouble.

It’s the perfect audio manifestation of Alice in Wonderland’s spirit. It has a classical/traditional music foundation but everything was distorted as it passed through the looking glass.

Anyone heard the new mix on the new Blue Album ? There have been a lot of complaints about it, although some people like it. My opinion is it’s definitely not as good as the original, but this gives you a choice of mixes, I guess. This version sounds cleaner, with the noise at the end more up front. Some radio sounds are louder, while others seem to be missing, or much quieter. It sounds quite a bit weaker too, the original mix sounded strong and powerful, which gave the song a lot of its appeal IMO.

The ending sounds awful on first listen, the radio effects being far too upfront and centre, in the original mix it blended far better. Giles seems incapable of mixing some of the more technical tracks as he butchered ‘ADITL’ and ‘WYWY’ for 2017. I’ve read elsewhere that many of the ‘Red’ remixes are well done but the 2023 ‘Blue’ remixes (excluding ‘MMT’) are lousy. They are good to have but more likely fans will improve on them and give us better more consistent and enjoyable mixes.
I don’t have much desire to run out and hear whatever Giles has done as it’s pretty similar to the hundreds of remixes out there. Giles admittedly has access to the multitracks, and these are official (yeeeee!!!!!!!!!!!!1), but against that is Giles (and co) isn’t as good as some of the fans at doing it. Having the best toys and best access doesn’t make you the best or guarantee the best results. The amount of fixing on the outtakes over the years is scary.
Of the few I’ve heard I’d still opt to keep Lord Reith’s remixes as they are far superior to almost all of the official remixes that we have gotten.

I don’t pay much attention to Giles’s mixes in general. But now that you mentioned it i had a quick listen to it and, compared to the 2009 mix, i noticed that when the strings come in at the beginning the sound with more body and cleaner. Also the drums are centered and focused. And yeah, the radio noises at the end are clearer. And, as usually in these new mixes, the bass is more prominent.
But i just don’t care too much about Giles’s mixes.

What about genetics?
Mixing ability probably isn’t something that’s passed down genetically, but it’s interesting that people accept Giles as having authority over things like this because of who his father is. I’m sure his dad taught him a thing or two though, and I’m sure he’s studied the work his father did, given who he is.

Regardless of parentage, there are been so many errors over the years with the remixes. To most of us (I’m not a tech expert and get bored with high-end discussions) but a building can look amazing and be lovely to live in when built yet be fundamentally flawed due to how it’s constructed and need demolished.
