Isn’t there a short clip where John is playing the red SG with his fingers mid fretboard …..another clip where he hands this guitar to someone? Perhaps it’s a bit of John’s idea and George’s more fluent fingers.
Couldn’t someone just ask Paul……. A new question for Paul would be a true novelty.
I’m gonna check the vid now……See if I’m mis-remembering.
This is the full clip that I’d not seen before…….There’s a tantalising close-up at about 8 mins in…..BUT check out John on his guitar Casino at aprox 10 mins in where he’s doing some choppy chordy stuff way up the fretboard….Maybe someone on here could figure out the chords. Even if it is it still might have been George on the record…….But George wasn’t adverse to advice on occasions I recall George Martin gave him the solo note for note on Michelle and other instances.
Come on someone better than me have a look and check out the fingering for the solo.
I’ll have a look at one of the HB guitar tutorials sometime today see if the solo is played is a similar position.
Here’s James James’ take……..Doesn’t look like what John’s playing..Shesshe …..Although there is a two finger part that’s up on the 12th fret that’s begins the solo that’s identical. ……Then on the first video John goes up and James goes down but they could be the same just an octave up.

John’s seen playing both his Casino and George’s SG in the video. Interestingly, this is the only time you can see John’s Casino in it’s original sunburst finish without the pickguard.
As for the solo, it sounds like Paul but since there’s no evidence to suggest he did it, i’m going with Geoff’s claim of George. It could be possible that Paul taught George the solo, similar to how he taught Ringo the drum fills on Ticket To Ride and Come Together .

Hey Bulldog is a favourite of mine. It has a rockin’ solo, plus John and Paul goofing around at the end. It’s just a fun song to listen to but it has an edge to it as well.

It was one of my first Beatles songs and remains consistently in my top 5. It starts off full of angst and turns into a party before shifting slightly mournful and fading away, leaving you wondering where or how else it might have gone.

It looks like that is George playing some sort of solo from Wigwam’s video about 8 minutes in, because it’s right after another clip of him playing and the fact that he is playing it with his thumb is also an indicator… however, what he is playing doesn’t seem to resemble the solo very much, as I can’t think of any point in the solo where there are bends like that. It would be helpful if we had audio to go with this clip.
I've been up on the mountain, and I've seen his wondrous grace,
I've sat there on the barstool and I've looked him in the face.
He seemed a little haggard, but it did not slow him down,
he was humming to the neon of the universal sound.

Extended footage of the 11 February 1968 session…
Interesting that it suggests some of the drumming may have been Paul as he’s seen playing in places.

Eurgh, cold canned beans on toast, George, really? At least heat ’em up on a hot plate first!
That metallic thing that Ringo’s playing with around the 3:30 mark: Is it possibly a camera attachment, used to enable those 360-degree rotating shots, I wonder?

I was watching that video, thinking about how patient Ringo was being, while there was no drumming to be done. Next thing: new shot, captain oblivious (Paul) playing drums while Ringo sadly walks over to grab something from near the kit.

Hey Bulldog is a very underrated song in my opinion. To me, this is the last song that John sang in the early John singing style. It’s hard to describe, but it seemed to me something changed with his voice after this song, whether something physical or just a style preference.
I think it is because it showed up on the Yellow Submarine soundtrack album, which completists buy, but likely few others.

Ha. Hey Bulldog has one of the most distinctive John looks. You know what session it is automatically.

The Oxford English Dictionary under “heavy metal” has a bunch of quotes, including:

Yeah, “heavy metal” is a very bizarre way to categorize “Bulldog”, even allowing that the genre was in its relative infancy in ’75. “Lady Madonna ” was, like “Bulldog”, built upon a very active boogie piano plus fuzzy guitar parts (and was recorded the same month); and yet nobody would call that one metal.

The instrumental section in this song remains one of the best in their catalogue. Alongside The End in my opinion. Yes, that good.

@Von Bontee I think Hey Bulldog ! and Lady M were recorded the same day. It seems that a film crew came to the studio to film the band record Lady Madonna . They arrived late and were invited to film Hey Bulldog ! instead. The film crew then clumsily put the Lady Madonna song over the film of Hey Bulldog !
I’m sure it’s available out there. Meanwhile, there is also the REAL Hey Bulldog ! song/video out there too. Ron Nasty will quickly correct me, but outside of the Get Back / Let It Be sessions, it’s the only time the Beatles were filmed recording a song.
