You both make good points – for instance the vocals on the Double Fantasy Stripped Down CD are overwhelming.

Hey Bulldog is a very underrated song in my opinion. To me, this is the last song that John sang in the early John singing style. It’s hard to describe, but it seemed to me something changed with his voice after this song, whether something physical or just a style preference.
Could it be the Heroin???????

That’s one of (m)any drugs that can cause weakening of the vocal cords. However, I don’t think his voice was “damaged” as much as tired. Years of not warming up before singing, drinking soda while you’re singing, smoking cigs or drugs can weaken or damage the voice. But if John’s voice was damaged, he would sound completely different. Damaged vocal cords don’t sound human.
His voice may have evolved and changed with age as well. Look at Paul. Overall, I think his voice sounds the same. He also wasn’t classically trained, and even when you are, it can be hard to find a balance between falsetto, a head voice, and chest voice. Paul is a natural tenor, so his voice basically sounds the same at any level. So overall, when you’re 35 versus 25, you might have to take a drink of water if you want that kind of resonance and intonation you had before without even trying. Just another reminder the Beatles are a gift.
Oops.

Was John doing heroin in February ’68? Thought he was still on acid and that heroin came after as Yoko usually gets blamed or accused of getting John hooked.

Here does a little mention to what kind of drugs he was taking at that time (more or less) and how he used them. Apparently it’s taken from Peter Brown’s book which i haven’t read so dunno if the excerpt is right or not.

Joe writes in his article on drugs that
From around the middle of 1968 through to the latter months of 1969, John Lennon was addicted to heroin. While never made as explicitly public as The Beatles’ use of LSD, it found its way into his songs, chiefly Happiness Is A Warm Gun (“I need a fix ’cause I’m going down”) and Everybody’s Got Something To Hide Except Me And My Monkey (“The deeper you go the higher you fly”), both on The Beatles (White Album ).
so John wasn’t using it in February 1968.

Probably you all have listened to this stuff already. But here it is the isolated vocal track:
instead of any kind of vocal damage it sounds to me like there’s a lot of compression and limiters in it . Anyways, a youtube audio file may not be the most reliable source…

I finally got around to watching/listening to the two videos on this page. I had never thought about the lyrics at the end of Hey Bulldog .
“Look At Me man, I only had ten children”
Is that some kind of confession on John’s part? That question is part serious and part not.

Paul says it not John. Going by Paul’s habits in the late 50’s/early 60’s he very well could have had 10 kids by that time but it wont be serious in the context of the song.
The dialogue, taken from What Goes On is
J+P) “Hey Bulldog …”
P) “Hey man”
J) “What’s that, [boy/Paul]?”
P) “Ruff!”
J) “Whaddya say?”
P) “I say, ruff!”
J) “You know any more?”
P) “Wowowowwwaaaaa”
J) Screams loudly
P) “You got it, that’s it, you hit it, that’s it man, Woop!, that’s it you got it”
J) Screams hysterically
P) “Don’t Look At Me man, I already have ten children” [also heard as grandchildren]
J) Screams hysterically
P) “[Clap man, clap / Quiet boy, quiet]” [unclear]
J) “Okay”
P) “[Clap! / Quiet!]” [unclear]

Perhaps my favorite Beatle song.
Too bad it’s lost on Yellow Submarine album (and cut out of the American version of the movie).
Thanks for the clips.

Also, John didn’t really use heroin for too long. I kinda doubt that it really had that much effect on his singing voice.
Then again, I could be completely wrong. What do I know?

Thanks all for reminding me how much I love this song.
Editing in favour of double-posting: and thanks for the dialogue, too; I never quite sorted out who said what. Although I have one quibble: why do they say John screams hysterically when it’s obvious that he laughs manically?

‘Rain ‘ is my #1. ‘Hey Bulldog ‘ is #1-A.
@meanmistermustard
I’ve been waiting for the perfect moment to watch the vid you posted 2 days ago. It was so worth the wait. The footage may not be new, but it’s new to me. I loved the differences.
@Shamrock Womlbs
The iso vocals knocked me out. You know you are a hardcore ‘Hey Bulldog ‘ fan when you “bomp-bomp-bomp-ba-bah-bah-bah-bah” you’re way through that vid in your head, timing the vocals’ starts and stops dead perfect.
to you both.

The original stereo and the 2015 remixes are awful; are the 1999 (‘Yellow Submarine Songtrack ‘) or 2009 (‘Rock Band’) remixes any better? What about the original mono which is on ‘Mono Masters’?

The mono has some guts to it, and the vocals sit better in the mix than the stereo. The YSS mix suffers from the same stereo issue of a dumb wide separation for no good reason, and its only saving grace is its clarity. The vocal is huge compared to the mono though, if you like that, but its a different mix for the sake of it, it doesn’t add anything special for me. The Rock Band mogg is a weird mix of the mono mix and stereo elements (the vocals are panned in different places on one stereo track, the guitar and piano are stuck together in another stereo track, the rest are nominally stereo but practically mono), but the quality is between the mono remaster and YSS. And John definitely says “quack” on the Rock Band track.

Ya. Not sure why the vocals are coming out of the Right channel instead of centered in the Stereo, this late in their recording career (1969). Better in mono (in this case) since they are obviously centered.
But wasn’t Hey Bulldog only recorded in Stereo????, as the Yellow Sub LP was “Stereo only” with fold down mono?
