I’ll throw this in that I found at http://www.eden.rutgers.edu/~w…..eatles.htm
“The lines that follow describe his craving for sex, and how he will journey back “uptown” to see Yoko. The lines “going down” play on the sexual meaning of the phrase, with the clear non-traditional use being indicated since one would not travel down to go uptown.”
This is a student-run website out of Rutgers University English department.
I have no idea if this is right or not. Just thought I’d add it to the mix.

Interesting. He uses the same phrase, “going down,” to refer to his losing an erection in the song, “It’s So Hard.”
you got to run
you got to hide
you got to keep your woman
satisfied
but It’s So Hard , it’s really hard
sometimes i feel like going
down
There is also the line in “Well, Well, Well” where he says
she looked so beautiful i could eat her
…in the “Live in NYC” album he adds, “So I did.”

I told Little Girl what the line ‘…ate and donated to the National Trust’ meant– she loved it.

You know what that line means, @Beatlebug?
Hell! I’ve been listening to the song for 35 years and I’m still not sure what any part of that verse actually means!

As I understand it, eating something and donating it to the National Trust is what is technically termed ‘defecation on common land owned by the National Trust’. You’re welcome.

This is one of my very favorite songs on The White Album . It would have worked really well as a finale for it. This song is definitely a John song, but it still feels like a Beatles song too. It’s a lot of things: warm, calm, with a little pinch of a manic side.

I was listening to this song today and thought of something @Timothy said a while ago. Something about when the final section begins and you hear John’s lead vocal over the “bang bang” background, the immediate reaction is “oh yes. This is the best it gets. I genuinely do not think that music gets any better.”

I remember using a recording studio at university, only for voiceover work. But LOVED putting on the headphones and simply being in the room, feeling connected to what John and the Beatles used to do.
