Released on the Abbey Road 50th anniversary. I would argue this is a Top 5 Paul song.

The melody is genius. It weaves through the chords in a masterful, melodically and lyrically reminiscent of I’ll Follow the sun, however the guitar picking part sounds similar to Blackbird , almost played in the Bach etude style.

The notion that Paul might have rejected All Things Must Pass from Abbey Road becomes almost laughable when you listen to this outtake, thrown aside and give to Mary Hopkin.. why!?!?a-hard-days-night-paul-7

Her voice is stunning but I prefer it stripped back with just the acoustic guitar and no backing vocals.

Note: This thread originally appeared in the “Paul McCartney ” section of the forum. I mentioned to AG that it was in the wrong place, and should properly be here, in the “Songs” section. AG suggested it might be better in a thread for songs they gave away. I pointed out that it has, since its release on the Abbey Road  50th, an entry from @Joe on the main site in the Beatles A-Z song list, and that it was similar to Come And Get It  – a Paul demo recorded in the last year of the Beatles for the artist it was given to that was only released on an archive Beatles release, and that it should be treated the same, especially since Joe had put it in with the Beatles songs on the main site, as he had with C&GI. So, although a solo Paul demo, it’s a Beatles release and not a solo Paul release.

@Ahhh Girl was convinced, asking me to make this note to explain to @sir walter raleigh the reason for the move, and @The Hole Got Fixed did the move. Thanks to both for the move here.

I agree with swr, this is an absolutely fantastic song. Paul’s version could have made a great addition to McCartney, easy. It’d be right at home on that album.

I was slogging thru math homework and decided to put the 2019 Abbey Road on and was half listening and then THIS came on……… and I went

WHAT

HOW HAVE I NEVER HEARD THIS BEFORE and why does it sound like I have heard it before AND HOW HAVE I LIVED ALMOST 21 YEARS WITHOUT BEING AWARE OF ITS EXISTENCE…

It was one of those “there was love all around, but I never heard it singing, no I never heard at all Till There Was You ” song discovery moments. I love those. a-hard-days-night-george-9

Paul’s demo is great, but the Mary Hopkin version is both beautiful and absolute genius, one of those tracks that leave you grinning stupidly from ear to ear. I heard it for the first time in years about a week ago and it just stopped me in my tracks. Serious contender for a funeral exit!

My funeral song is the Anthology mix of the ‘All Things Must Pass ‘ demo. Perfect lyrics and my choice will not change.

Anyway…
