I find it incredibly amusing that the two back-up singers are singing “tit” which alongside being a rude word can be used as a disparaging remark about or to someone considering that John said that the girl in ‘Girl’ turned out to be Yoko and (in the words of Joe) “finds himself helplessly drawn towards“.

Easily one of my favourite John vocal performances. He sounds so resigned, sad, puzzled, forlorn, alone and stuck in this cycle of a distorted relationship with a girl that he wants to leave but can’t due to emotional blackmail.
It’s very possible that the cycle has been going on so long that everyone has stopped trying or listening due to him always going back.
It’s the polar opposite to the songs of all-out threats that John would sing, and another side to those kinds of relationships.

John drawing in his breath makes the song for me. It really gives that sense of wistful weariness.

Interesting that the song’s title is ‘Girl’ since it is very much an emotionally manipulative, bitchy-female kind of abusiveness he describes in the song. Later he would go on to write a song called ‘Woman ‘ about a much healthier, more positive female role in his life, to which he was apparently indebted. It appears he grew up and so did the females in his songs.
