Zig, I took a closer look at the site and you’re absolutely right about the source of the lyrics. In fact they have a little link under each song to thank folks for their contribution. I’m going to fix the “It can’t get more worse” lyric and see what happens .

Well, I guess I could let Paul off the hook if there is some corporate rule against having John’s lines in the official published lyrics. Well, maybe I can. But, on the other hand, he’s Paul McCartney , rock-n-roll rebel, and it is his website. He should put his friend John’s words in there.

It’s just further proof that Paul broke up The Beatles.
Yip. He obviously did this deliberately, jealous of the awesomeness of John who clearly turned a dreadful song into one of the greatest ever. In truth Paul should hand over every penny of royalties ever made from this track to Yoko whilst begging for forgiveness at daring to enter into her presence.
Wait ! Is Yoko good or evil? John choose her and he cant be wrong yet she alone did break up the Beatles and ruin music from that very second so… She must have polluted his mind.

I was thinking about Got To Get You Into My Life being about drugs while listening to Getting Better . Could the *you* in the line “Since you’ve been mine” be drugs? Things are getting better since he started taking drugs?

You can look at many songs and bring in a drugs connection, especially on albums such as ‘Pepper’ when drugs were so much in use.

It would go against the spirit and intent of the album, but I agree it would be very interesting to hear.
1.The Beatles 2.Sgt. Pepper 3.Abbey Road 4.Magical Mystery Tour 5.Rubber Soul 6.Revolver 7.Help! 8.Let It Be
9.A Hard Day’s Night 10.Please Please Me 11.Beatles For Sale 12.With The Beatles 13.Yellow Submarine

The song personifies the Spirit of the 60’s itself… While ‘A Day In The Life ‘ & ‘Within You, Without You’ more effectively opened ones’ eyes to a panoramic view of the cosmos, ‘Getting Better ‘ offers up some of the insights arrived at after indulging in such a journey… It was seemingly the last time in history when life got better each and everyday before John later declared to the world that “the dream is over”… As a lot of their recordings were beginning to take on the solo treatment (1 Beatle + a backing group or session musician) ’round this time, ‘Getting Better ‘ sounds like a Beatles’ record, to the point where they could even have performed it live as a group onstage… It wouldn’t have been all that out of place on ‘Revolver ‘… The only possible bridge to their last album before they exited into the Great Wide Open…:-)

What’s the incredible sound in the right channel of the stereo version from 1:36 to 1:58? It’s a riveting effect unlike anything else. Is that George’s “droning tambura” mentioned in the Bible article on the song? If so, I’m sure it was treated somehow or fed through something, like so much of the album. It’s a wonderful moment.

What you’re actually hearing is the sound of Ringo playing chess. I believe – judging by the timbre – he has been inadvertantly recorded moving his Bishop from C1 to C3.

Of course! That’s it! I should have recognized it, particularly having heard Ringo say that this is the album he learned to play chess on.
It sounds eerily like George playing a droning tambura, but you’re right. It’s definitely a bishop moving from C1 to C3.

The drone going under “I used to be cruel to my woman…” is stunning. Very subtle use of the Indian instruments they had been playing around with at the time. The singing duet there plays well over fewer instruments, then the drums come back in for “Man I was mean.” Its one of my favorite parts of the Pepper album, despite the lyrics being somewhat questionable.

A stripped down sgt. the pepper would be great. without all the paraphernalia and psychedelia.
I do not agree with this, the puzzle pieces of sounds and instruments are as integral to the songwriting as the chords or lyrics.

Why are the lyrics questionable, it’s an admission of very bad behaviour being turned around and it all getting better?

The meaning of the song is expressed in its darkest way during that line, yet it is still an admission of unacceptable behavior. Getting Better from something that should never have been done in the first place. You don’t beat your wife anymore? That’s not something to be proud of it is the bare minimum of acceptable behavior. This isn’t an attack on Lennon’s character or anything, just my thoughts on the line itself. It is still one of my favorite lyrics because of how hard it hits. (no pun intended)

It’s unacceptable behaviour that is never condoned, excused or reasoned away, instead there is an admission of it being wrong and a change in how he now acts. He doesn’t even say he’s become perfect or swots it all away but is instead doing the best that he can which all takes time.
