Novelty records are fine as #1's. Glee/Justin Beiber/Jonas Brothers/Bad Music of Today are not worthy #1's.
Thanks for clearing that up for me – I can now see the grass!
My point, however was in agreeing with Von that number 1's do not translate into greatness. Regardless of the genre, a number 1 is a number 1.
Whether it is worthy or not, I will leave for others to debate. I can't sit here and tell you I've liked every number 1 song ever recorded. It just seems to me that if enough people bought the record causing it to acheive a number 1 ranking, how do you take away the “worth”?

To the fountain of perpetual mirth, let it roll for all its worth. And all the children boogie.

Because all the people who bought the bad #1's of today don't have taste.

Something else – Number Ones can be misleading, saleswise too. “Strawberry Fields Forever “/”Penny Lane ” sold way more over the years than “Release Me”.
Paul: Yeah well… first of all, we’re bringing out a ‘Stamp Out Detroit’ campaign.

But you need to remember that “Strawberry Fields Forever “/”Penny Lane ” were two A-sides, meaning they needed to double Release me in sales.

That’s interesting, what makes a number one these days. I never hear these people’s music, I just know the names, Bieber (it’s his b-day if you didn’t know 🙂 , Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, blah blah blah the rest. It’s pretty easy to ignore music these days, but I suppose when I was younger it wasn’t quite as easy. We had Hanson, those boys from the backstreet, Nsync and all the rest of the pop scene. Now that was some incredible music.
