With the Stones releasing a new compilation marking their 50th anniversary (Grrr! – that the title not a comment by me) i wonder if Apple will follow suit? It may appeal to new fans but the thought makes me groan, I want something explosive and exciting not another tracklisting to be compiled on itunes.
Whats better – Nothing or 50 (“50 tracks documenting the iconic story of the greatest, most influential band ever, The Beatles: from Love Me Do to A Day In The Life to Real Love ” – thats the advertising quotation)? I’d vote for nothing.

The compilation – it expands the brand, which (despite our grumblings) is good. I mean,
1 got me (and many others) into the Beatles, so…
Here’s something I just thought of: is Paul’s Super Bowl performance on CD? You know, a best of the Super Bowl CD would be an awesome idea (yes, I’m watching the season opener – go Dallas!!)

I’m a lifelong Beatles fan, but I also used to work in the music industry.
Whatever gets released next will need to be more than just another hits package and appeal to as many people as possible across the entire listening spectrum: The neophyte, the casual listener and the hardcore fan.
Here’s what I can see plausibly happening:
– A vinyl re-release campaign. This would matter more for North America, where the only proper album in print is ‘Abbey Road ‘, but newly mastered 180g vinyl copies in both mono and stereo would be a guaranteed hit, in both sales as well as a cultural event.
– The Hollywood Bowl tapes. The bootleggers proved that even with just a little cleaning, they’re damned listenable.
– Some sort of live overview, to cover the spectrum of their ‘live’ career.
– A revisit of the cancelled ‘Sessions’ or some variant. A good and proper collection of the Beatles’ most-listenable unreleased material.
– A ‘Get Back ‘ sessions compilation. There is a ton of material, and it would be easy to create a nice set of the best and most interesting takes.
– An officially sanctioned video collection, using the short films that the Beatles made themselves, sequences from their films, as well as video collages a la what we saw in ‘Anthology’.
– Finally… ‘Anthology’ on Blu-Ray. With lots of new extra features.
E is for 'Ergent'.

Nearly everything on Sessions was on Anthology. Its unlikely to be anything in the vein of another Anthology as it was seen to be the best of what there was at the time. If there are to be more outtakes released personally i think it would be something like a specific album overview box (which would appeal to the collectors) alongside a 1 or 2 disc compilation for the more casual fan (Pepper being the more likely starter).
As for everything else, makes sense to me but this is Apple so expect 50 (a new compilation of their 50 best and most influential tracks) and some lovely Beatle aprons and be amazed when they blow us out the window.

I’m nominating you to a new post. Chief Researcher, Apple Promotions. The new initials after your name will say it all.
My favorite was the Beatles Pencil Eraser Cozy or some such – you crack me up!

Nobody’s said anything about them releasing the full version of In Spite Of All The Danger . I believe they’re missing out a verse or more on Anthology and I would like to hear that.

A fake version of the complete In Spite Of All The Danger is out there. Why anyone went to the bother is as big a mystery as why it was edited in the first place.

The reason they won’t release (or didn’t at the time) Let it Be is because it painted a picture of The Beatles that most people didn’t want to see. They wanted the cheerful, bubbly foursome they saw in the early days, not a broken group of petty squabbles.
"White Album - My joint-fave Beatles album along with Revolver. They show the two sides of Beatles. Revolver's very controlled - even though it's also very innovative. The White Album's playful and almost ramshackle. It's like a scrapbook kept by a genius. Fantastic stuff."

Oh – I appreciate why they are dragging their heels – just something I would like to see. Someone should let them know that the cat is out of the bag, and in fact has been since the late 60s.

It’s a bit like the train wreck affect – even though there’s a horrible disaster you are just drawn to it nonetheless. I’m pretty sure most of the people know that they weren’t the best of mates by the end, they even said it on tv, albeit a watered down version. It’s not soemthing that’s going to cause massive shock and damage like 9/11 tapes.

With you there. Given all the angst they even seem to be enjoying themselves up on the rooftop.

There is at least one perfectly good unreleased Beatles recording that was left off the Anthology releases: Paul McCartney ‘s demo for “Goodbye”, which was officially released as a Mary Hopkin number.
Does anyone know why that one was left out? It’s a pretty tune, and while it’s no contender for a list of the best Beatles music, it’s way better and of greater interest than some of the stuff that was included.
And yet, it’s seldom mentioned in discussions of unreleased material. Why?

There are plenty of interesting recordings that didn’t make Anthology. Another interesting example would be John Lennon ‘s May 1963 demo for Bad to Me. I suppose the reason for leaving them off is that they were home demos of songs given away and never seriously considered as being “for” The Beatles. Something like Junk gets included because it was recorded during the demo session for The White Album . Come And Get It makes it because it’s a studio demo. Lots of people here wonder about an Anthology 4, and undoubtedly recordings like Goodbye (and Bad to Me) would be on the wish list.

Because he wrote and i heard did a recording of it, i would love to hear John sing “Good Night . Although i did hear somewhere (probably here) that it doesnt even exist.

I’d like to see some sort of alternate take of While My Guitar Gently Weeps at some point. The acoustic demo is great and all, but we know there were several other takes with various arrangements, and I’d like to think that some of them have survived at one point.

^I didn’t even know something like that existed. Now I really want to hear that too.
I’m afraid that they might have gotten wiped, like a lot of alternate takes. I guess it’s just wishful thinking that some of those could have survived and might be out there somewhere.
