I've been up on the mountain, and I've seen his wondrous grace,
I've sat there on the barstool and I've looked him in the face.
He seemed a little haggard, but it did not slow him down,
he was humming to the neon of the universal sound.

Is there anybody going to listen to my story
All about the girl who came to stay?
She’s the kind of girl
You want so much it makes you sorry
Still you don’t regret a single day
Really, you could substitute any verse from this song. Very evocative and poignant.

Ahhh Girl, SgtPeppersBulldogI say in speeches that a plausible mission of artists is to make people appreciate being alive at least a little bit. I am then asked if I know of any artists who pulled that off. I reply, 'The Beatles did'.

Pools of sorrow, waves of joy are drifting through my open mind
How does it feel to be one of the beautiful people?
And the people who gain the world and lose their soul
Living is easy with eyes closed, misunderstanding all you see
Play the game ‘existence’ to the end
Love is old, love is new, love is all, love is you

My independence seems to vanish in the haze
And when I awoke, I was alone, this bird had flown/so I lit a fire, isn’t it good, Norwegian Wood ?
Though I know I’ll never lose affection/for people and things that went before/I know I’m gonna stop and think about them/in my life I love you more
I want her everywhere/and if she’s beside me I know I need never care/but to love her is to need her verywhere
I think a no, I mean a yes, but it’s all wrong/that is I think I disagree
(There are SO many brilliant lyrics…)

Limitless undying love which shines around me like a million suns… And ignorance and hate may mourn the dead… So I lit a fire, isn’t it good… Living is easy with eyes closed… But you know I know when it’s a dream… I look at the world, and I notice it’s turning… What did you see while you were there? Nothing that doesn’t show… What do you see when you turn out the light? I can’t tell you, but I know it’s mine… Clutching forks and knives, to EAT THE BACON!… When the rain comes, they run and hide their heads, they might as well be dead… No one was saved… When the broken-hearted people living in the world agree… Nothing you can say, but you can learn how to play the game… Then it’s far too late, and they pass away… Now they’ve lost themselves instead… But The Fool On The Hill sees the sun going down… Take these broken wings and learn to fly… Will she still believe it when he’s dead?… About a lucky man who made the grade… Nowhere Man , the world is at your command… Left a pool of tears, crying for the day… Love is old, love is new, love is all, love is you…
And there’s so many more…

A great bunch of lyrics in there. You know a songwriter (or rather, several of them) is talented when you can read a line of text and it immediately evokes the melody and feel of the whole song in your head.

Hmm, or maybe ‘You know you’re a hardcore Beatles fan when…’ which begs ‘You know a songwriter is (or rather, several of them are) talented when they write songs that inspire this kind of reverence…’

All of the above……..But I’ll add:
I don’t know exactly why it should but when John twice sings in the song “………often stop and’……..(as offen stop’an). So much meaning to appreciate elsewhere in the song and I go for this internal rhyme?
