I’ve never cared for this song. It’s bearable if it comes on but I find it such a lame track and the handclaps at “hold me (clap clap), love me (clap clap)” are as cheesy as they come. John and Paul were correct in their opinions towards it and I am content to add it to my list of Beatles songs I couldn’t care less about if I failed to hear them again before I die.

Out of curiosity, what else is on that list? Part of me would feel rotten going to the grave not having heard as much Beatles as I could. Especially a song as good as Eight Days A Week .

I would agree with that @meanmistermustard it sounds a bit wishy washy to me. The production has never sounded as great as their other recordings around this time – at least to my ears. I still think it’s essentially a good song but did George Martin just have an off day? He didn’t sprinkle his magic on it. One other thing that always bothered me about it is the guitar sound which I assume has some kind of effect on it. I used to play the vinyl single and always think I had a bad copy and my record was warped perhaps because of that effect. In fact even now when I hear it on cd it still sounds warped.
Great melody though.

Off the top of my head
- Eight Days A Week
- Penny Lane
- Magical Mystery Tour
- Hold Me Tight (which I despise as we all know)
- Good Night
- Julia
- Medley: Kansas City /Hey! Hey! Hey! Hey!
- Your Mother Should Know
- Nowhere Man
- A Taste Of Honey
There’s ten so far. 10 Beatles songs I really do not care exist or ever seek out (outtakes/alternates may be worthy of a listen). I also do not care for/dislike the ‘Past Masters ‘ or ‘Let It Be ‘ mixes of ‘Across The Universe ‘.

Don’t Pass Me By and Run For Your Life are the only two I can think of.

I like your former and love the latter. Goes to show how diverse Beatles fans are and why the ‘White Album ‘ was right to be a double album.

Since the first moment I played the ‘Blue Album ‘ on long play cassette (so pre-1993) I’ve never cared for ‘Penny Lane ‘ or any of its alternate mixes/outtakes. Folk shout about the imagery, lyrics, musicianship, production and all the rest and yet every single second of the song passes me by and always has done.

I’ve never seen the connection between Penny Lane and any Beach Boys ‘s track though Paul says he wanted to achieve that kind of Beach Boys ‘s clean sounding production … i mean Penny Lane sounds as clean to me as Magical Mistery Tour for instance…

Its got kind of a Beach Boys groove with really tight orchestration. It definitely reminds me of Pet Sounds.

Not particularly. As with most artists and groups after 2 or 3 songs I start to get bored; ‘Pet Sounds’ is ok but I’ve never found it to be the masterpiece as claimed.

I love their Greatest Hits “Endless Summer” LP, but never figured out what the big hoopla was about that “Pet Sounds” LP?????

It was a greatest hits collection that delivered me to the conclusion that the Beach Boys are pretty boring after 4 or 5 songs.
And yeah. ‘Eight Days A Week ‘.

I quite like the cheesy hand claps.

There is a moment in the ‘Anthology’ where Paul mocks cheesy handclap use in crap songs, ‘Eight Days A Week ‘ reminds me of that.

But what about the tune? Its such a great pop song I feel as if I must defend it.

The song is defended by the fact that you like it for the reasons you do.
The tune however does little for me. I never liked it all those years ago when I first played ‘Beatles For Sale ‘ and knew next to nothing about the Beatles and I still don’t. Difficult to describe why, some songs just don’t hit people as being of any good, importance or relevance.

I still remember my first feelings in ‘73, hearing “Eight Days A Week ” and those other great songs off the Beatles 1962-1966!

However poor/cheesy/half-hearted a song ‘Eight Days A Week ‘ may be, it never fails to give me ‘Oh That Magic Feelin’ ‘, and that’s why I love it. Makes sense that someone else may not feel the same as I do when they hear it.
