I love the ending on the Anthology version. It brings out that cute little personality of Ringo’s that shows in some of his solo recordings.

I love how Ringo’s first original is an all out Hootnanny! Although it is one of the least structurally sound and complex songs in their catalogue, they seem to be having a lot of fun, making it one of the most enjoyable songs they have.

This is a great song, IMO. I love the way it was recorded; really putting Geoff Emerick through the motions: “What can’t we put thru a Leslie speaker?”
Ringo did a great job on the drums. They manage to obtain this washy, horrible, trashy sound, and yet be wonderful all at the same time. His use of sleigh bells is also quite brilliant. Some great drumming on the White Album .

In the 50th deluxe book, it’s written that the track was first laid down by Ringo playing piano and Paul on drums which goes against what has been written everywhere where it’s reversed. It does seem strange that they would play it that way (Ringo giving up his drums to Paul on his own song) so what’s going on?
Would this be the only Beatles song with Ringo and drums on it but he not playing them?

Feel like I shouldn’t like this song as much as I do.
I used to listen to Don’t Pass Me By on repeat forever and ever when I first listened to the White Album in my Baby Beatlemaniac years and I thought it was terrific. Now I found it still to be good, but not as good as I first thought it was.
Fun Fact: Also in my Baby Beatlemaniac years, I was in that beginning phase where I couldn’t differentiate between any of their vocals, so I always believed that Paul sang this song just with a funny voice because I was under the impression that Ringo didn’t sing any other songs except “Boys ” and “Octopus’s Garden “. Now I know better, fortunately, and can very easily tell who sings what and differentiate vocals with ease.

I’m a little surprised there are so many positive reactions in this thread, it has always been my impression that this song was not very well revered by Beatle fans. But I’ve always absolutely loved it.
When I was younger I used to think John and Paul both played fiddle licks on this track. I don’t know what made me think that, but I had this image in my head of the two of them taking turns adding fiddle licks. I was really disappointed when I found out it was an outside musician.

I think it’s horrible and I hate it, truly. Not only the worst song of the Beatles for me, but also one of the worst songs I’ve ever heard. It heavily diminishes the White Album . Like now I can’t call the White Album my favourite album because it means that on some level, I’m praising this song and I have to defend it, which I will never do. Ringo can’t sing for sh*t, the strings are distracting and horribly mixed, the lyrics are bollocks, the pacing is horrible, the structure isn’t there, it’s repetitive, cocky, rough, unfocused, melodically bankrupt, the instrumental is disgustingly unpolished and it’s nearly 4 minutes long. It’s everything a Beatles song shouldn’t be and honestly a disrespect to the other three members. When it comes up I just ask to myself: they where together for more than 10 years, Ringo composed only two songs in the span of those years, and one of them was that?! It’s embarrassing, a wasted opportunity, a waste of time and honestly I can’t see myself liking it in a hundred years. The biggest, most annoying big red spot on the Beatles discography.
So what?, that’s my opinion.

There are no strings, it’s a guy playing a fiddle – and some would say badly.
If you do get into the song there is very little there to get excited about analytically, I doubt it was meant to be tho. I used to really like it, I’ve moved to it’s ok, no harm was done and life goes by.
And hey, it was #1 in Scandinavia which might mean something.
[Your hatred of this is very similar to how I feel over ‘Hold Me Tight ‘ (x2, the ‘RRS’ Paul solo track with the same name is another song I have nothing whatsoever to say in a positive light, I detest both with a remarkable hatred. That medley is up there with the biggest pieces of s**t any Beatle ever put together and released ever).]

The Georgia Satellites do a decent cover of this. Speaking of which how do you post videos?
If on youtube or similar site it should be a simple matter of copying and pasting the link. @Dingle Lad.
However, this gives me a great reason to travel thru and search around the very dusty catacombs of the forum and locate the long-forgotten ‘How Do You Do It? The Ongoing Guide To Forum Functions, Features and Facets‘ thread* which gives the answer here (if they still work).
*That thread was created over five and a half years ago!!!

Hey everyone! I’ve been hosting a podcast called Ranking The Beatles. During lockdown last year I put 223 songs in my own personal preference of least favorite to favorite, and each week we have a different guest, typically a musician, and discuss the next song in the list.
On this week’s episode, we discussed “Don’t Pass Me By .” I was curious because we found some discrepancy between what’s posted here on Beatles Bible and what’s in Mark Lewisohn’s books, and I wanted to try and get clarification of verification of sources.
On Beatles Bible, it lists Paul as drummer, and only mentions Ringo on percussion. Lewisohn’s book lists Ringo as drums and percussion, and Paul on drum overdubs. The overdubbed fills definitely sound like Paul’s drumming style. The rest of the track….maybe a toss up. It grooves more like Ringo, but also Paul could approximate that kind of Ringo feel at times, even though he tends to push the beat more.
So, wondering if we can get to the bottom of the mystery. And if you’re interested in fun chats about the entire Beatles catalog, give us a listen! New episodes every Tuesday, and good fun debate on our Facebook page.

@rankingthebeatles, I see that @meanmistermustard has puzzled over this very issue so I brought your question to this thread.
