I think that the song is FAB, when you compare Ringo & George’s first songs respectively (‘Don’t Pass Me By ‘/’Don’t Bother Me ' to John & Paul’s (‘Hello Little Girl ‘/’I Lost My Little Girl', I’d say that Ringo & George easily showed more potential! An interesting tidbit on ‘Don’t Pass Me By ‘ is that you actually get a brief preview of it during a 1964 interview which was included on a not very well known ‘The Beatles Talk Down Under’ L.P. which was released here in Canada in the 1980’s. If you’re lucky to find it, it’s an excellent document of their 1964 Tour of Hong Kong, Australia & New Zealand. During one of the interviews with Ringo after he re-joins the band down under, he’s asked about whether or not he’s going to write some songs, he begins to tell the interviewer about one that he’s working on before Paul interrupts and starts to recite “Don’t Pass Me By , Don’t Make Me Cry, Don’t Make Me Blue…, Oh Baby, I Love You, do do do do do…”…:-)

There is a bit of Don’t Pass Me By which Paul tosses out on the BBC radio show Top Gear, broadcast on the 16th July 1964. I havent heard ‘The Beatles Talk Down Under’ LP but i’d hazard a guess that its taken from that and misidentified.
Was always a heavy fan of DPMB as i love that honky tonky country hoe down sound and the violin playing is so good, recently i’ve grown less loving of it but i think that is thru years of over-play. The lyrics are basic but fun, a good first beatles song and my favourite of the ones offered out of tracks like Love Me Do (first Lennon/McCartney released song), I’ve Lost My Little Girl, Hello Little Girl , Don’t Bother Me .
There is a really cool uncut version of DBMY with the first verse repeated after the first violin solo and Ringo’s count-in – and it has the bonus of the sound of a door being knocked right after “listen for your knock dear” which isn’t in it the first time. It would have edited out for length but thankfully was given to Peter Sellers, on a tape with a handful of early White Album mixes, by Ringo – know known as The Peter Seller’s Tape. I actually prefer the uncut version to the one on the LP.

Yeah, that BBC Broadcast is the same interview from what I remember of the ‘Talk Down Under’ album, there is some audio from England on that album and I may very well have remembered it wrong when I said earlier that it was “after he re-joins the band down under” (from his hospital stay). That version of ‘Don’t Pass Me By ‘ from the Peter Sellers tape is the best one that I’ve heard (comparing it to the ‘White Album ‘, ‘Rarities’, & ‘Anthology 3 ‘ versions). It took them 4 years to finally get around to recording Ringo’s first song, perhaps this is what Ringo was referring to during his ‘Anthology’ interview where he says “I’m a slow writer”…:-)

It was a common practise back then for album compilers to take whatever they could, shove it on and then what say it was regardless of being correct or not so maybe that’s what happened.
Weren’t John, Paul and George laughing their heads off whenever Ringo came in with a new song as he had rewritten some old country standard so maybe it took that long for Ringo to write words that wouldn’t have resulted in the first lawsuit against one of the four.
Ringo wrote something like 2 words in What Goes On , this, and half of Octopus’s Garden (George deserved a co-credit for all he helped with it). Not too bad an output – until you realise that’s over a 7 year period. Still 3 good songs, well 1.51 if going by actual lyrical contribution.

Oh and Ringo counting that you can hear in the instrumental parts “1 and a 2 and a 3 and a 4 and a 5 and 6 and 7 and an 8”.
I was coming to this thread just to say that I just heard that for the first time.

I have never listened to the mono version before… Gosh, Ringo sounds like a chipmunk! Why was it sped up like that? Did they also do that with other songs on the mono remasters?
Thankfully it’s the only sped up song on the Original white UK mono LP. Sounds much better in Stereo in my opinion!

I have this on a bootleg called White Sessions which encapsulates all of the Sellars tape and adds quite a few other tidbits, sadly the bootlegger decided to master it in a hallway or perhaps a stairwell and it comes out sounding really harsh and trebly. Fortunately I have another bootleg which has the whole take 7 including the clapping and upset dog and Ringo yelling IF YOU WANT SOME MORE YOU’VE GOT TO TURN THE TAPE OVER!
I'm like Necko only I'm a bassist ukulele guitar synthesizer kazoo penguin and also everyone. Or is everyone me? Now I'm a confused bassist ukulele guitar synthesizer kazoo penguin everyone who is definitely not @Joe. This has been true for 2016 & 2017 but I may have to get more specific in the future.

Ringo’s clapping etc is a home recording he made, its not part of ‘Don’t Pass Me By ‘.
In the meantime, Ringo busied himself at home compiling a tape for his new mate, consisting of rough mixes of many of the songs for the Beatles’ upcoming album. This two-sided reel was auctioned in 1988 by Phillips, sold for £2,300, and a copy appeared on bootleg within two years.
Side 1 opens with the five songs copied for all four Beatles by Mal Evans August 23 and ends with RM4 of “Don’t Pass Me By,” copied for Ringo July 12. Concluding the first side, Ringo whipped up a special message for Sellers (A), applauding and cheering wildly (“What a show! More! Wonderful! Bravo!”) as one of his dogs barked in the background. This is followed by his instruction to the listener to turn the tape over for “more crazy music,” first spoken, then shouted. Having flipped the tape, Ringo opened the second side with a mélange of “world music,” overlaid with mumbling, bubbling, and thumping noises, plus a cry of “It’s a raid!” (B); this segues directly into RM3 of “Yer Blues ,” copied August 15 for George and Ringo. This is followed by RM6 of “Good Night ” and RM5 of “Everybody’s Got Something to Hide Except Me and My Monkey,” both copied July 23 for John and Ringo. The tape wraps up with three of the four songs copied by Mal Evans (one copy of each, presumably meant for Ringo) August 27; Ringo evidently decided to spare Sellers from sitting through the fourth song, “Revolution 9 .”(‘That Magic Feeling’ – John C. Winn)

Adore Don’t Pass Me By . It’s always the best fun when he sings it during his shows, the audience loves it.

Who says “one two three four five six seven eight” in this song?
I assume it’s the guy who plays the violin part – Jack Fallon because it doesn’t sound like Ringo.

It doesn’t sound like Ringo to me. We should argue about whether it was Ringo or Jack Fallon for twenty or so pages!I’ll start the altercation off for us.
You, sir, are WRONG! That is not Ringo!
It clearly clearly IS because I hear it is Ringo and thats all the evidence required so , now apologise for daring to suggest otherwise.
