I used to not like Dig A Pony (DON’T KILL ME PLEASE) but it’s grown on me.
That’s okay. It’s an odd one at first but definitely a grower.
I had a longtime fantasy about writing new verses for it and making it a ‘normal’ song… which is kind of blasphemous, I know… I don’t think I’d be able to tamper with it, though.
I enjoy the obscure lyrics but they also get swept aside because the main message is “all I want is you.”
John had nonsense lyrics in Abbey Road , but nonetheless, Dig A Pony is like his last hurrah on that front as a Beatle.

This is not really one of their best songs by any means. But I can’t dismiss it because it has that interesting guitar riff, and also some tasty fills by George. Even so, it sounds kinda sloppy. But I keep coming back to it over the years.
This is one of John’s last “nonsense lyric” Beatles songs. Come Together and Sun King appeared on Abbey Road , which was recorded later but released sooner. Those also have nonsense lyrics. John’s singing is really off key on the rooftop performance.
John seems embarrassed and frustrated playing it in the Let it Be movie. He stops in the middle and asks “Anybody got a fast one?”. Paul looks up at this point, and with the well known tensions at the time, I always thought he had a look that said “My enemy just blinked. And here’s my chance to push my Get Back song”. It could be my imagination though lol. It’s not even mean spirited, necessarily, guys are competitive by nature.

Been listening to this one a lot lately. Just love the melody and John’s vocals. One of his absolute best IMO.

The guitar playing all over this album is underrated, George has some really nice licks, this song in particular…

Beatlebug, TangerineTreesI've been up on the mountain, and I've seen his wondrous grace,
I've sat there on the barstool and I've looked him in the face.
He seemed a little haggard, but it did not slow him down,
he was humming to the neon of the universal sound.

I love his playing in this song. It’s some of the most cosmically perfect song-serving ever. Quintessential George.
