in the original promo for Rain , John says “that’s the first song to contain backwards music,” but in fact Tomorrow Never Knows was recorded previously, and contained backwards masking. I think what he actually meant was that it was the first song to contain backwards LYRICS. any thoughts/

@ernash23 I believe what he meant by that was that it was the first song released with reversed music.

They both were recorded around the same time But Rain got all finished and put out before Tomorrow Never Knows

Actually, the backwards guitar solo was recorded on April 22, 1966, after Rain was recorded on April 14-16, 1966 (Source #1, Source #2). Also, Rain was released earlier than Tomorrow Never Knows . So, no, John didn’t mis-speak in either case.
