Woah, I’m making a lot of threads lately. Guess I just have a lot of ideas.
Anyway, if you had to define each album with one song which ones would they be? Basically the songs that sum up the style and spirit of each album.
For me:
Please Please Me : Twist And Shout
With The Beatles – I Wanna Be Your Man
A Hard Day’s Night – Can’t Buy Me Love
Beatles For Sale – Eight Days A Week
Help ! – Ticket To Ride
Rubber Soul – You Won’t See Me
This is where it gets hard.
The White Album – I’m So Tired
I've been up on the mountain, and I've seen his wondrous grace,
I've sat there on the barstool and I've looked him in the face.
He seemed a little haggard, but it did not slow him down,
he was humming to the neon of the universal sound.

A Hard Day’s Night – Any Time At All
Help ! – Another Girl

Sgt Pepper – With A Little Help From My Friends

Cool lists. Just out of interest, if you could only pick one song from each album for a desert island, would they be the same as your picks here?
For me I would choose In My Life instead of You Won’t See Me as that’s my favorite Beatles song.

I've sat there on the barstool and I've looked him in the face.

My list for that would be quite different. And I’d probably include something from YS album, too!

Nice idea for a thread. More interesting than the tedious “ranking” threads.
Please Please Me : ‘I Saw Her Standing There ‘ – This opener not only sets the tone, but defines what they were doing at that time. A perfect combo of Rock and Pop.
With The Beatles : ‘All My Loving ‘ – It was hard not to pick one of my favorites from this album. George Martin said that at the time WTB was recorded, the band was still thinking in terms of singles, not albums. To me, ‘AML’ could easily have been a single. It’s no surprise they opened with it on The Ed Sullivan Show. The songwriting was stunningly far ahead of where it was mere months prior and was about to take another giant leap with the next album.
A Hard Day’s Night : ‘Can’t Buy Me Love ‘ – By far, my favorite album of the early ones. Lennon’s songwriting was sizzling, but this McCartney offering defines the album for me. AHDN is such a fun album (and movie) and this song oozes fun from every pore. It’s no wonder it was featured in the movie…twice…during the fun scenes.
Beatles For Sale : ‘I Don’t Want To Spoil The Party ‘ – It has been well documented that, at this point, The Beatles were tired. This album reflects that to a large degree. While I enjoy BFS, it is easy to argue that it is the most subdued (for lack of a better term) one to date – possibly of all their albums. No disrespect to ‘No Reply ‘, but what a downer of an opener compared to the first three. There are some attempts to rock on the album along with the slower ones. ‘I Don’t Want To Spoil The Party ‘ is a pefect blend of both aspects and defines the collection for me. As if to say, “I really want to rock, but sod it. I’m too tired”.
To be continued…

Beatles For Sale – Rock And Roll Music
Rubber Soul – Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)
Sgt Pepper – Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds

Continued from post #8…
Help !: ‘Ticket To Ride ‘ – When I listen to all of the albums in sequence, Help ! is like a ray of sunshine after the gloom that was Beatles For Sale . Of course there are the more serious ballads on this one like ‘You’ve Got To Hide Your Love Away ‘ and ‘Yesterday ‘. But the rest of the album feels like a warm late spring day. There is so much going on here, folk, ballads, Pop, Rock, etc… ‘Ticket To Ride ‘ is the stew that combines all of those ingredients and defines this album for me.
I’ll have to continue later. There is so much going on this month – life is taking a big bite out of my Forum time. It’s all good, though.

White Album Disc 1 – Glass Onion
White Album Disc 2 – Cry Baby Cry
Yellow Submarine (the four new tracks): Hey Bulldog
Let It Be – I’ve Got A Feeling

Interesting idea for a thread. I have been doing a lot of ranking/list threads so I guess I will continues this trend but at least this one is a little bit different.
Please Please Me – I Saw Her Standing There – The first song off of the first album which is fast, fun and full of melody.
With The Beatles – All My Loving – Possibly the best written song on the album.
A Hard Day’s Night – Can’t Buy Me Love – This song is fun and upbeat and reflects the Beatlemania era.
Beatles For Sale – Eight Days A Week – Although Beatles For Sale was more of a tired record it was still part of Beatlemania and this song probably fits that era the most.
Help ! – Ticket To Ride – Help ! and You’ve Got To Hide Your Love Away were in contention but I think this song is more of an expression of that time.
Rubber Soul – Norwegian Wood – A new era for the Beatles has started. Now we have the band becoming more poetic with their lyrics and in my opinion this is the most lyrically poetic song on the album.
Revolver – Tomorrow Never Knows – So many defining songs on this record but this one ultimately wins out because it was the sign that things are changing.
Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band – A Day In The Life – This could go to multiple songs but this is the most ambitious songs on this album.
Magical Mystery Tour – I Am The Walrus – This song defines Magical Mystery Tour as everyone knows this song.
The White Album – While My Guitar Gently Weeps – This was hard but I chose this song as I believe this was when George finally became an equal to both John and Paul.
Yellow Submarine – It’s Only A Northern Song – Although I prefer Hey Bulldog as a song the Yellow Submarine film was based around the Pepper era so I chose this song as it was a Pepper reject.
Abbey Road – Something – I chose Something as once again George has stepped up and written one of the greatest songs of all time.
Let It Be – Get Back – I chose Get Back because the whole Get back/Let It Be project was supposed to be The Beatles getting back to their roots and even though it might not sound like the old Beatles it’s one of the few tracks that the band appear to be having fun on.

If we are to pick a defining song for each album, some are unfairly already picked for us. Namely those albums that share the same name as a song, like Help ! I don’t know how you could pick anything besides that since the boys picked it for us. So, I’ll pick a runner-up for those. There are some interesting responses here. My picks aren’t very exciting 🙂
Please Please Me – Please Please Me / Twist & Shout (everyone knows Twist & Shout, even more so than PPM !)
With The Beatles – All My Loving
A Hard Day’s Night – A Hard Day’s Night / Can’t Buy Me Love
Beatles For Sale – Eight Days A Week
Help ! – Help ! / Ticket To Ride
Rubber Soul – Norwegian Wood (this song defines the album AND the rest of their musical output: ground-breakingly unconventional)
Revolver – Tomorrow Never Knows
Sgt. Pepper ‘s Lonely Hearts Club Band – Sgt. Pepper / A Day In The Life
Magical Mystery Tour – Magical Mystery Tour / I Am The Walrus
The Beatles – Revolution 9 (this one was VERY hard but no can deny that EVERYONE took notice of this track, for better or worse)
Yellow Submarine – Yellow Submarine / All You Need Is Love

I am going to do this list but will add 3 rules that I feel must be said:
1. All 4 Beatles must be heard on the song, if we’re using a song to represent the band the whole band should be there
2. The song must’ve been released as a single during the band’s lifetime, doesn’t have to be in the UK but it had to have a single release, the only exception is if there is no song on the album or EP that had a single release
3. No covers
Also of note, there will be a runner up for some albums which doesn’t have to follow these rules although they must be at least somewhat popular. I will only use runner ups if I am having trouble choosing between 2 songs, as only 1 is allowed per album.
Here we go:
Please Please Me (Twist And Shout is the runner up, originally disqualified for being a Top Notes/Isley Brothers cover)
A Hard Day’s Night (Can’t Buy Me Love is the runner up)
Help ! (Ticket To Ride is the runner up)
Eleanor Rigby (Yellow Submarine is the runner up)
I Want To Hold Your Hand (Bad Boy is the runner up, originally disqualified for not having a single release)
All You Need Is Love (not counting B-side or recycled tracks)
Birthday (Revolution is the runner up, originally disqualified for being the single version, whereas the album version is not as good)
Get Back (Let It Be is the runner up, originally disqualified for not having John on the album version, John being only on the single version)
Strawberry Fields Forever (Hello, Goodbye is the runner up)
If you're reading this, you are looking for something to do.

Fair enough.

Why? What a ridiculous restriction to apply.
3. No covers
I get why but ‘Twist And Shout ‘ is iconic on ‘Please Please Me ‘.
