I’m sure i read somewhere in some book that at one time ‘I’ll Cry Instead ‘ was a contender for Ringo to sing lead on and i’m sure i went “ehhh!?”. Obviously reading it in a book doesn’t make it true.

For You Blue sounds pretty close to fitting in this category I think. What do you all think?

Definitely. That steel guitar imparts a country flavor, although George doesn’t really manage a twang. Maybe he wasn’t from the Southern part of Liverpool. ???? I’m sure that @Mr. Kite knows that the song was written for you-know-who.

I was listening to London Town (the album) this morning, and “I’ve Had Enough” hit me as being country-ish.

Can vaguely remember reading this as well, so you’re definitely not mad.

A lot of the music of The Ballad Of John And Yoko could be used in a C&W song.

Good call, Girl. That song has always sounded very Country to me, especially the downbeat after “Christ, you know it ain’t easy.” John also gets right into the spirit in the way he sings it with that whiny, twangy tone. I can’t figure out if that’s Hank Williams’ style or another Country icon.
BTW, I was listening to I Will the other day–what a beautiful little ballad that is. In a comment somewhere on YouTube, a mother said she always sang that song to her daughter as a lullaby since she was a baby. That song now acts as a touchstone for their mutual affection–this is how people are affected by the Beatles. Anyway, the musical refrain in the song is definitely Country-sounding, as others have noted. The refrain sounds incongruous to me, however; it’s a different tempo, tone and style from the rest of the song. It works, like a lot of Paul’s songs that seem pieced together from disparate fragments, but it seems like a curious interlude in a soft ballad.

Might be explained in some way by John stealing ‘TBOJAY’ from ‘Lonesome Tears In My Eyes‘.

I just listened to @Into the Sky with Diamonds’s radio show episode about The Beatles and harmony. Baby’s In Black hit me as country-ish. Does anyone else think so?

Ahhh Girl, Thanks for listening!
I would put “Baby’s In Black ” in the waltz category if only for being in waltz time – but is that mutually exclusive with country?

‘Baby’s In Black ‘ is “a slow number and its a waltz for all of you over ten. Some people play fast waltzes and some play slow waltzes and we’re going to play a slow one”.
Oh, how i love that intro from John.

Movie Magg is a Macca cover of a Carl Perkins song. As country as turnip greens.

Okay everyone, it’s 2015…. is it safe yet to admit the Beatles were heavily country music influenced?
Make it so. Any country fans in here? I don’t mean Dwight, Garth, Emmy, Travis, Carlene, Hwy 101 or god forbid the
new stuff. What about, off the top, Hank Locklin? Chet on every tune is a real bonus there, just wonderful guitar sounds.
What about Roger? If you’ve only heard the half-dozen more-or-less novelty hits like doWackaDoo, and of course King of the Road (beat out Yesterday for song of the year) then you have a treat waiting. Best singer ever, funny, great writer, fine guitarist and fiddler. Some say he was the best songwriter of the decade, Fab Four a close second. (<sacrilege)
Ferlin, Red, Chet, Tennessee Ernie etc.etc. etc. – a lot of corn mixed in but the good stuff waits. Oh how I envy you pop-music-fed people just discovering the ocean of great country (also known as folk music, as was blues) waiting for you on youTube. Hyuhp.
Guitarists, see if you can find ‘Country Jazz’ by George Barnes, knok yer sox off.
I still play Act Naturally and people dunno it, and they go ‘YeeeHaa’ every time, then are chagrined when some sage informs them it was a Beatles tune.

In discussing ‘What You’re Doing ‘ recently, I mentioned that the song had a definite Country Western flavor, which led me to search for a topic on how the Beatles were influenced by Country Western music or which songs had a Country feel. Surprisingly, there is no thread on the subject, although @meanmistermustard and @Bungalow Bob touched on it in a thread about Paul’s greatest hits. They mentioned ‘I’ve Just Seen A Face ,’ ‘Another Girl ,’ ‘I Will ,’ ‘I’m Looking Through You ,’ ‘I Don’t Want To Spoil The Party ‘ and ‘I’m A Loser .’ The subject calls into play the issue of what characterizes a Country Western sound, and how it is to be distinguished from rock, rock-a-billy, and similar genre. To me, Country means jangly or slide guitars, maybe a banjo or fiddle, and definitely twangy enunciation, not to mention lyrics which include pickup trucks, hound dogs and hearts broken by women (or men) of dubious morals.
Aside from the lyrics, and not counting ‘Act Naturally ‘ for obvious reasons, which other songs have a Country Western vibe?
After reading this, I went and listened to the songs listed and they do have a country tune!! I was very much compelled because I myself enjoy listening to country tunes!

This morning, I turned the water on in the shower and then turned on Past Masters v. 1. (Or was it the other way around? I was too sleepy then to think about the order in which I was doing things, and I am still too sleepy now to remember. I have a wicked headache. But anyway…) Love Me Do hit me as country-sounding. Was that due to my sleep-walking state or does anyone else hear a bit of country in that song?
