I’ve noticed a weird sound at 1:11 , right after “my baby’s got me locked up in chains”… i dunno if it is Paul doing one of his famous “woooh” or what… sounds like something fading in quickly and then just disappears.

^Just listened for it. I never heard it before, but there is definitely something there- good ears, SW!  It almost sounds like someone (Paul?) singing “ahhh”. Or maybe it was John?

Who sings the ahhhhs in ‘Chains ‘? paul-mccartney-facepalm_gif

Take it to the “even easier trivia!” thread, Zig apple01

Ever since falling in love with the Star – Club album, I’ve been fascinated with just how LOUD their amps could be – seems like GM never wanted them to play above 7 or so! Or at least not until Paperback Writer maybe…anyways, I love these too infrequent bits of Beatley gtr distortion!

(Thought there was an early version of this thread where the exact timings of the 3-4 fuzzy bits was annotated? Maybe I just saw it on a YT video…)

GEORGE: In fact, The Detroit Sound. JOHN: In fact, yes. GEORGE: In fact, yeah. Tamla-Motown artists are our favorites. The Miracles. JOHN: We like Marvin Gaye. GEORGE: The Impressions PAUL & GEORGE: Mary Wells. GEORGE: The Exciters. RINGO: Chuck Jackson. JOHN: To name but eighty.

Daily song review: 4/213, Chains

Another cover! Like the previous cover, it’s not especially interesting or unique but it’s still kind of fun. I would say this one is worse than Anna (Go to Him), but mostly because the original song is worse, rather than the fault of the Beatles themselves. I think this cover is better than the Cookies version, but neither is especially great. When people talk about how in the early ‘60s, albums were often composed of mostly filler, this is exactly the kind of song I think of: Boring but passably fun covers of not even old songs.

The only real notable thing is that this is the first lead vocal by George! I think George eventually becomes a fantastic singer, but in ‘63 he’s easily the worst of the main 3 singers. He does a fine job here, but it’s not great. The backing vocals from John and Paul help. I like the lyrics of this one. The Goffin/King lyrics are great even if the melody and instrumentation are mediocre. It’s certainly nowhere near deep, but I like love-related songs that aren’t purely positive.

Score: 5/10. Close to a 6 but not quite.

Favorite cover of the song: Not technically a cover since she wrote it but the song didn’t come out under her own voice until 1980, so it definitely counts as a cover to me: The 1980 Carole King “cover:”
