I think we just have to admit to ourselves that this song will not come out. Nor, in my opinion, should it. Let’s face it, even the most hardcore Beatles fans can barely tolerate Revolution 9 , which is basically the same idea as Carnival Of Light . So if this ever came out, nearly one to one, the response would be, “this sucks so hard,” and basically vindicating George’s decision to veto the track from Anthology 2 .Of course there are some among us who would easily pay obscene sums for a real life recording of Paul brushing his teeth, like the “Weird Al’ parody sketch for “Anthology 17.”
Actually I love Revolution 9 . Not a huge fan of Two Virgins though.

Well, more power to you for that, naturally. In my experience, a lot of people, including my late uncle who really turned me on to The Beatles, can’t stand the track.

I actually think Revolution 9 is relatively creative, but this is probably not the right thread to talk about it.

I do think it would be nice to get an official Carnival Of Light release, for historical reasons if nothing else

I want to hear it badly, but I doubt I’ll relisten that much. Whats The New Mary Jane and Revolution Nine are two different sides of avant garde Beatles music, both credited mainly to John. I wonder where Carnival falls on the spectrum between those two or if since Paul was apparently the mastermind, it takes a completely different approach. Either way I want to hear it. now!

An unreleased song, a perfect time capsule, sitting there silently, patiently, all this time. If it ever gets released, it’s going to be a head trip.

I think it’ll surface on bootlegs before Apple ever considers releasing it. ‘Course there have been so many fakes over the years that nobody will believe that it’s real.

I wonder if Revolution 9 would be less reviled if they had put out the Revolution 1 /Revolution 9 single that John wanted and put the fast version and Mary Jane on the album instead.
That would leave the B-side of Hey Jude vacant, so maybe Not Guilty for that.

Giles WILL do a Revolver remix album one day and hopefully he decides to do The Magical Mystery Tour as well, it’ll probably be the last of the Beatle catalog to be remixed (If he decides to do the first few albums first) so when he does, it’ll be the perfect opportunity to try and squeeze Carnival Of Light in there – and also the lond version of Flying !
That’s my last bit of hope, if it doesn’t happen we’ll have to take matters into our own hands….

it was recorded during the Penny Lane sessions, so I could maybe see it being on MMT? I think I read somewhere it was considered for that recent deluxe version of Sgt. Pepper ‘s, but it was rejected
welcome to the forum btw!

A Revolver Remaster is a tough sell for fans because the album sounds so perfect, i mean its absolute perfection. Sgt Pepper , The Beatles, Let It Be all have controversial song choices or exclusions as well as multitrack tapes that can be re-applied with modern technology. I can’t get into the mind of Giles, but why would you want to mess with a recording so perfect? The perfect melding of technological and musical innovation that only George Martin could put his finger on the controls.
Edit: When i say “re apply with modern technology” I mean there was a huge opportunity during the Pepper remasters to take what everybody is so impressed by, the fact that they recorded it on a 4 track, and mixed it as if there was no track limit.

Yes, it would be less criticised if it was the B-side to Revolution 1 . I prefer the fast version of Revolution and Mary Jane, but I’m not sure if The White Album would have made a difference with them included instead.

No, it wouldn’t make much difference to the album overall but Mary Jane is at least a song – if an unusual one – and the statement that John wanted to make would get more prominence – and hopefully more clarity – as its own standalone single.

The track was played at The Million Volt Light and Sound Rave, a public event so people who attended that, I’ve no idea how many, must have a clue. Surely playing the versions ‘out there’ to people who were at the event might identify if one of them sounds remotely what they heard in 1968? The starting point is to appeal to who actually went via social media to contact here I guess, then give ’em links to all the fakes and see if one actually turns out to be real after all.
