The few people who’ve heard and described it publicly – such as Lewisohn, Ian McDonald and Barry Miles – to me have gone out of their way to find euphemisms for “piece of crap.” So I have little interest in hearing it.parlance
If I recall correctly, both George Harrison and George Martin hated it.
I’d like to hear it as a novelty, but not as a good piece of music. I’d probably enjoy it for it’s weirdness, but not much more.

Paul was asked about ‘Carnival Of Light ‘ during the Jimmy Kimmel Show while launching ‘NEW’ last year, and doesn’t seem all that keen on releasing it himself. Go to the 3:20 mark of this video to hear his remarks:
Seems that George Harrison perhaps changed Paul’s mind about this one…:-)

I don’t know. Revolution 9 seems like it was more organized and less impromptu than Carnival Of Light . Revolution 9 actually seems to have a message of-sorts, whereas Carnival Of Light was just quickly-made, throwaway noise.
Of course, not having heard Carnival Of Light , there’s not much I can say about it that isn’t purely speculative.

Yeah, John put a lot of time and thought into Revolution 9 . Wasn’t just a random collage of sounds made in a day.

It sounded like the festival organizer was disappointed too. Like, “Oh! Here it is! Oh! Oh!… Oh.”

This Onion article immediately made think of CoL. (And the sax solo reference made me think of You Know My Name… even though that’s one of my favorites.)

I don’t see why Paul doesn’t release it on his own considering it was never meant to be a Beatles’ release. That was the explanation George gave when rejecting the Carnival Of Light for the Beatles Anthology.
I think that you are mistaking George’s “explanation” for the conflict that surrounded the inclusion of Paul’s ‘Come And Get It ‘, which was clearly a Paul McCartney song/demo which none of the others were involved in. It’s ironic though because George’s ‘All Things Must Pass ‘ demo that was included on ‘Anthology 3 ‘ was also “never meant to be a Beatles’ release” (maybe briefly during the ‘Get Back ‘ sessions) either, and it only features George solo. Perhaps that was the compromise that they’d reached to “allow” for each other’s “solo” material to be included.
In the case of ‘Carnival Of Light ‘, George’s objections appear to be strictly based on artistic integrity for I believe that all four Beatles are involved in the recording. In this article, Paul discloses that someone in The Beatles’ camp called it “rubbish” and it’s widely believed to have been George http://www.theguardian.com/mus…..l-of-light …:-)

Actually, Come And Get It *was* offered first to the Beatles for inclusion on Abbey Road (and when Paul recorded his one-man version, John was present in the control room. Paul invited him to participate but John declined).
And I love George, but he’s so full of crap anytime the whole “avant garde a clue” thing comes up. He consistently crapped on CoL anytime it was mentioned for release, yet it is *HE* and only *HE* as the ONLY other Beatle besides John on the two Beatles avant garde pieces that WERE released: Revolution 9 and What’s The New Mary Jane ?
Methinks it has more to do with his lingering bitterness toward Paul than anything else.

I’ve heard that before, but it can’t be called more than a rumor. I’ve also heard it suggested that those are unused sounds from Being For The Benefit Of Mr. Kite. Supposedly, LOVE contains pieces from 130 different Beatles recordings and a full list has never been released to the public. As far as I know, nobody has ever figured out all 130.

You may have better luck hearing a genuine “Excerpt” from ‘Carnival Of Light ‘ if you give the ‘White Album ‘ a spin. According to Engineer Geoff Emerick in his book ‘Here, There And Everywhere ‘, some bits were actually used for the construction of ‘Revolution #9′:
Midway through the recording of “Penny Lane ,” we spent the better part of an evening creating a tape of sound effects, under Paul’s direction, for a live “happening” called the Carnival Of Light . It was a bit of nonsense, really, but everyone had fun doing it. Whenever The Beatles tried something really outrageous, George Martin would roll his eyes and mutter a clipped “Oh my God ” under his breath. Looking back, I guess that everyone was tripping his brains out that night, but we didn’t know it then. When John started shouting “Barcelona” repeatedly in one of his Goon-like voices, Phil and I were doubled over in laughter. That line, and other bits and pieces from that night’s sessions, were later used in the sound pastiche “Revolution 9 ” on the White Album .
And this, from an Interview with Geoff with ‘Ear Candy’ Magazine:
E.C.: You also mention “Carnival Of Light ” in your book. Was any of this used in Paul’s “Liverpool Sound Collage ”? You also mention that parts of it were used in “Revolution 9 ”? Do you remember which parts? Do you think it was a good choice to leave it off of the Anthology? I mean, if you have John’s “What’s the New Mary Jane” dribble, why not some experimental Beatles?
Geoff: I’m not familiar with the “Liverpool Sound Collage ,” so I don’t know if any of it was used there. The bits from the Carnival Of Light session that were used in Revolution 9 , as I recall, were of John saying the word “Barcelona,” and some other random sound effects. It was really just noise and cacophony, not a proper song.
I don’t remember hearing the “Barcelona!” bit in ‘Revolution #9′ personally, mind you, I haven’t listened to that track attentively for quite some time now…:-)

I think I might have just found the REAL Carnival Of Light !! It matches up with a lot of what is described in the article on the song on this very website. It even has the echo-soaked “Can we hear it back now?” at the end and it clocks in at 13:48! I think it has been talked about before on this website but has always been put off was fake. It sounds darn real to me! The only thing that worries me is that there is the drums from Strawberry Fields Forever on it, but it’s very possible that Strawberry Fields was recorded before that. Here’s the link:
Please give this a listen before it gets taken off the internet! I have it recorded on a powerpoint in extremely poor sound quality, so if someone could download it in better sound quality, could you please send it to me in a private message? THIS IS SO EXCITING!

Yeah I can definitely see where you’re coming from there. You have to admit that it is intriguing.
