I guessed Taxman as a possible song for a picture in the song/picture game (link). While typing the word, I thought about the gender of the word. We never say taxwoman. Tax collector would be the nongendered term to use.
Which got me to thinking about other work roles mentioned in Beatles songs so I thought a thread for the topic would be nice.
Lovely Peter meter maid – wait “maid” is usually feminine, right? Do they call those people “meter readers” now?
Well, anyway, non-gendering of a profession or any other work discussions welcome.

The term I have nearly always known to be used in the UK is “traffic warden”.
I think “meter maid” has rarely been used in the UK, but of course Paul chose to include it in the lyrics of the Lovely Rita song. I suppose “Lovely Rita , traffic warden” wouldn’t have worked well for the lyrics.

Was the girl in ‘Honey Pie ‘ a lady of the night!? I always just assumed she was a career girl who went to the US and got her big break like so many have but it’s possible.
‘Father Mackenzie’ from ‘Eleanor Rigby ‘ is another career.
The band in ‘Yellow Submarine ‘.

Likewise, I have always thought that “working girl, North of England way” is referring to a career girl. Who knows? Paul would have known his intention at the time but, if he was asked now, he may not remember.

The judge in ‘Maxwell’s Silver Hammer ‘, also the teacher and, if we can push it a little further, the student who is Joan and Maxwell who is a studious serial killer.

Cows are creatures of habit, they’ll bring themselves home if it gets late enough. Hence the saying “till the cows come home”, meaning it’s so late they’ve finally up and decided to come home of their own volition. I think. So this farmer must’ve failed his duty.
