We aren’t even in the top 50 yet and we have 9 songs from Revolver still to come, yet only 3 from Rubber Soul and 4 from Sgt. Pepper ‘s??? That’s bizarre. Also, I’m surprised that Here There And Everywhere , For No One , Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite and Because are still here but we’ve lost songs like We Can Work It Out , You’ve Got To Hide Your Love Away , With A Little Help From My Friends and Don’t Let Me Down .

54. If I Fell
53. You’ve Got To Hide Your Love Away
52. We Can Work It Out
51. She Came In Through The Bathroom Window
Six songs from Abbey Road , interesting spread. I would have put IWYSSH and She Came In Through The Bathroom Window a bit higher myself. Also surprised All You Need Is Love is this far down. Also Also With A Little Help From My Friends at 80?! What the dickens.

Forget all that! Girl at 56! It ought to be at least in the top two.

Ahhh GirlI say in speeches that a plausible mission of artists is to make people appreciate being alive at least a little bit. I am then asked if I know of any artists who pulled that off. I reply, 'The Beatles did'.

As noted above, at least 20 songs should be in the top two; and as AG noted – quite the pleasant conundrum we have!

I hope someone has some magic dust to sprinkle over the results to make them invisible to Paul. He doesn’t do well in the top 10.

Reaction #1: Out of the twenty-odd Beatles songs that George wrote, he got three in the top ten. That’s impressive.
Reaction #2: I had a second reaction, but I forgot it.

If I had voted, things would be different. All My Loving would not be in my top 20, nor Let It Be , Happiness Is A Warm Gun or Help ! Two songs from Revolver , ONE from Peppers, the next all the way back at 39! It does seem to get more balanced if you take the top 50, 9 from Revolver , 6 from White Album , 5 from Abbey Road , 4 from Peppers, 3 from Rubber Soul , and 6 singles not on albums, which shoots up to 12 for singles that are. Probably miscounted a heap there, but the singles clearly win.

Well, you’ll have the chance to find out what difference your vote makes in a few weeks, @ewe2, when @Starr Shine? and I launch “The 2015 Canon Poll” (followed early next year by a poll of their non-Canon releases).
Our list will also be slightly more complete. Of the five songs that they released alternate versions of, only one (Revolution ) has both its versions included, and the German recordings are also missing.
It is interesting just how much John’s efforts dominate the Top 20 (11 of the 20 could be considered primarily John songs).

My biggest surprise: Because in the top 10! Great song and is in my top 30 IIRC, but I’m surprised. Also George DOMINATES that top 5, heck yeah!! Amazing to see Dear Prudence in the top 10 too.
Would have liked to see You Never Give Me Your Money in a higher place, it’s my #1 but I would have been happy with it in the top 40.

Congratulations to us all! It took a lot of time. Thanks in particular to IveJustSeenAFaceo who stuck his neck out and volunteered to tally the results.
Random thoughts:
– McCartney did fine of course, but could have done even better. Then again, he has a serious albeit temporary disadvantage: he’s still alive. His two competitors died young, one very young and murdered. Tough to beat that. For the sake of his rankings here I would suggest that Sir Paul asap end his life gruesomely at the hands of the Loch Ness monster.
– As a group, we like the serious McCartney (Hey Jude , Eleanor Rigby ) but not the cheerful whimsical Paul (Ob La Di 89, Good Day Sunshine 95, Yellow Submarine 124, When I’m 64 138, Maxwell’s SH 156, Rocky Raccoon 182)
– In the “Early Beatles (’63-’64)” fans vs the “Later Beatles (’67 – ’69)” fans competition, the early Beatles fans got killed. The first early Beatles song comes in at #20 (All My Loving ). Their 2 most famous songs of that era come in at 45 and 46 (She Love You, I Want To Hold Your Hand ).
– Speaking of being close together, I would have expected Strawberry Fields and I Am The Walrus (25) to be much closer.
– I’m with nzBeatlefan re Dear Prudence . I don’t see it anywhere near that high. Its twin on the White Album , Julia , IMO is much better. Then again, the Beatles put Dear Prudence right up there at the beginning of the album, so what do I know…
– “The End ” is the perfect ending to the medley, the perfect ending to the Abbey Road (I know, Your Majesty,…), and the perfect ending to the perfect career. But by itself???? #11? (Should we in the future have the option of the Medley as one song?)
– As a group we have no reverence for classic Beatle songs. That’s not a bad thing. Each generation sees things differently. Still it’s a bit of a shock to see classics such as Fool on the Hill (112), Michelle (143), etc… get such a kick in the teeth.
– We’re not crazy about joyful songs. The first truly joyful song is Penny Lane at #17. (You could argue for Here Comes The Sun at #5; but I think we’re willing to go with such a happy song at #5 ‘coz it’s George whose authorship alone knocks it down a few pegs on the happiness scale. (When not writing about love, he is usually meditating about the human condition. So we give him a pass. If this were a Paul song it would be up there with Good Day Sunshine .)
– Though 21 people was a good turnout, still, if a relatively small group of people really liked or disliked a song that would have had a major effect on that song. Perhaps the next time around we can get an even bigger turnout! Ron Nasty and Annadog40, go for it!

Never thought I’d see those two mentioned in the same sentence as classics.

Hmm, wonder what would have happened to its ranking if I’d have voted and put Because somewhere around #299?

@trcanberra
Well that brings up a good point: what does it take for a song to be considered a classic?
One testament to a song I suppose would be the number of covers that it spawned. For a few years after its release, Fool on the Hill was being heard everywhere it seemed. This wikipedia entry shows why:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/T…..n_the_Hill
Another measure of a classic would be a major award. And yet another would be how often a song has been performed by various performers. Check out this wikipedia entry.
“Michelle ” won the Grammy Award for Song of the Year in 1967.[8] The song’s win over “Born Free“, “The Impossible Dream“, “Somewhere My Love” and “Strangers in the Night” was seen as something of a triumph for The Beatles, who had in 1966 been nominated, but were unsuccessful, in nine categories. In 1999, BMI named “Michelle ” as the 42nd most performed song of the 20th century.[9]
Of course another measure of a classic is how often it is recorded, performed and discussed decades down the road – and there, perhaps you’ve got me. Then again, based on that definition, just how many Beatle classics are there?
