Everyone here is a Beatle aficionado, but there seem to be strong Forum disagreements on the merits of this or that song.Remarkable how the same songs appear on the ‘Unbelievably Underrated’ and ‘Worst Beatle’ song threads.
Are there any songs that we could all agree represent the Beatles at their best? Or at least be fine examples of their work.
How would we go about determining that?
Could a list of all Beatle songs be posted somewhere, and somehow we could give each song a score?
Could we give a thumbs up, a thumbs down, or no thumb at all?
Could a thread be set up here that everyone could edit a la Wikipedia? We could then simply add our names next to the songs we like.
All suggestions welcome.
Here’s the OP, nothing there about “Canon Restrictions”, or ANY Restrictions for that matter…:-)

The word “songs” is perhaps the wrong word to use to begin with for many of the “songs” (e.g. ‘Roll Over Beethoven ‘ is a Chuck Berry Song that The Beatles covered, etc.) aren’t Beatles’ “songs” at all. It sounds like a few Biblers decided upon this exercise to be based on the best Beatles’ “recordings” that were released during a very specific time period, or what a few view to be “canon”. I’ll leave this suggestion with the hopes that maybe someone will pick it up (I don’t possess the Computer Savvy to pull it off) and this exercise may actually get completed and have more participation.
The Exercise needs to be simplified so that those participating will simply have to click their mice. Many have set up “vote threads” here in the past where the top of the thread page features a percentage graph (Pete vs. Paul for ‘Best Looking Beatle’ comes to mind), could this same setup not be used here so that we don’t have to rely on one person to tally a substantial workload? Of course, the Hundreds of Beatles’ recordings will take up significant space, but it could be broken down to segments. Take ALL Beatles’ Official Releases from the ‘Love Me Do ‘ single to present and simply allow users to click their favourite Beatles’ recordings (any “canon talk” could commence after the results trickle in which should reasonably reflect popular opinion anyways). The nice thing about this setup is that new users will be able to submit their favourites as well. The Exercise as is, is flawed, and never really gave us as a group a chance to even attempt to “agree” on what’s best, NO restrictions and let the voters decide what’s “Best”…:-)

Perhaps we could phrase the discussion differently:
Suppose a stranger unfamiliar with the Beatles said, “let me listen to 20 of their finest songs” – what 20 songs would the Forum members pick?
If “Twist And Shout ” or some other cover makes it into that elite group, so be it. I don’t think FAAB or RL would make it to the top, so the discussion is a bit academic!

If we were to include all the songs can we include ‘The Barber of Seville’ which comes at the end of ‘Help !’ and has the Beatles on it contributing noises. It is easily the best of the instrumental pieces in any of their films and should have been on the soundtrack (tho he hadn’t been dead for 100 years and i have no idea how copyright works in the US). I cannot find a video of it online (seems to have been taken down as i have posted it before) but since its in a Beatles film (therefore officially released) and has all four Beatles surely it counts?

Better than ‘Flying ‘ from the ‘Magical Mystery Tour ‘ film?…:-)

Yes, we could include “The Barber of Seville” – but what would be the point, right? Same for any recording buried somewhere in the BBC recordings, the Xmas records, the Star Club recordings, the bootleg record from the Seattle concert, etc… None of those are going to make it to the top 10, top 20, top 30 of our list – and if they do, so be it. It would simply mean that in our collective opinion that work is among their very finest.

For me without a doubt. I like ‘Flying ‘ but ‘TBoS’ is brilliant. Rossini and the Beatles make one awesome team. They should have done more together.

Surprised that the classic “Fool on the Hill” fared so poorly. I think “Martha My Dear ” should have fared better.
“Baby’s In Black ” is one of my guilty pleasures. I like the waltz time and McCartney’s high, high, high harmonies. Alas, Harrison hits a somewhat sour note as he bends it on the solo.

Wait … Don’t Let Me Down came in at #115!?! I was expecting that to crack in the top 50, if not top 30!! Yet we still have Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da and It’s Only Love …

Suprised by a number of these being so low (‘A Hard Days Night’, ‘She Said, She Said’ as well) but its how folk voted (their positions can be seen here).
Would it be an idea to have a recap over what has been so far since the results have been getting posted for over a year?
Ok that was a damn good joke @IveJustSeenAFaceo.
The real latest list is in the spoiler. ‘You’re Going To Lose That Girl ‘, ‘It’s Only Love ‘, ‘You Wont See Me’; love them all but their positions are about right.

It really was a shame. I was extremely surprised when I saw it, I almost didn’t believe it.

Oh god, it has been 10 months since the first result post. Wow. I’ll set up a recap, just gimme a second.
