It’s about time! We’ve talked about best guitar riffs, best harmonies and best songs in general- but which songs, sung by each of the boys, do you believe to be their best vocal performance?
When I’m blaring the Beatles on my computer, my mum is always quick to add, “Alissa, they aren’t even very good singers!” Of course, you can imagine my proceeding comeback or wry look.
So! What do you think?
Ringo: Act Naturally
While it’s not my favourite song he sings, his voice soars on this little ditty, well done, Ringo!
John: Norwegian Wood (This Bird has Flown)/You’ve Got To Hide Your Love Away
Both have that… John factor. The slight rasp, low key range respectively and just… a lasting effect. These are withstanding vocals- brilliant! I had a tough time with this one… You’re Gonna Lose That Girl, A Day In The Life , Happiness Is A Warm Gun , She Said She Said , No Reply and I Am The Walrus were contenders, too.
Paul: Mother Nature’s Son /Golden Slumbers
Paul’s voice to me is perpetually amazing. I think he has the best vocal chops out of the group- his talent is overwhelming! What I like about MNS is the delicate state of his voice and how it just flies with the music. Golden Slumbers is tear-worthy- beautiful! Hey Jude was on the list too, with countless others.
George: Love You To
One of George’s great ones. I was debating this with Within You Without You and It’s All Too Much , but this came out on top! Love the low register and indian vibe to his voice.
Tongue, lose thy light. Moon, take thy flight… see ya, George!

Can I be a bit selective here? There are certain parts of songs that give me those ‘goosebumps’.
= the part in I Should Have Known Better where his vocal is just single tracked – the second “And when I tell you that I love you….”. Wicked!
= the part in And I Love Her where his vocal also goes single tracked (the second “I give her all my love….”)
Those are two bits that no matter if I’m singing along to the songs I always stop at those points and just listen.
= Here Comes The Sun – his vocal is delivered so softly, yet stunningly.
= With A Little Help From My Friends – as this is one of my favourite All-Time Beatles tracks……and Ringo sings it!
Footnote: As Alissa will know, I can list many Lennon vocals that have the same kind of effect on me as I Should Have Known Better , but I’ll stick with that part.

Totally without thinking about it
John – Money
Paul – I’m Down
George – If I Needed Someone
Ringo – Boys
Like The Beatles themselves, I Love Rock N Roll!!
Onward my friends, and glory for the thirty ninth!!
5.04am
John: Money(That’s What I Want) & his voice on All I’ve Got To Do & A Day In The Life shock me.
Paul: I’ve always loved his “Little Richard” voice on I’m Down & I loved how his voice sounded younger in When I’m Sixty-Four . Brilliant.
George: Something & Devil In Her Heart . Like John, it shocks me.
Ringo: Boys & With A Little Help From My Friends . I loved his voice after he got his tonsils removed. He sounded much deeper.
Talking of Ringo, I listened to the mono version of Don’t Pass Me By the other day and was struck by how high his vocals sounded. Anyone know if they were recorded a semitone or two lower and speeded up later on?
Can buy me love! Please consider supporting the Beatles Bible on Amazon
Or buy my paperback/ebook! Riding So High – The Beatles and Drugs

Everett refers to Ringo’s “Double tracked sped-up vocals” for this song.

Weird, I’ve just been reading the booklet for the mono boxset just before i logged on and you’re dead right, the mono version has been speeded up a semitone although they don’t know why.

I really agree with you about the part in I Should Have Known Better ! John’s voice is so… I don’t know, but I love it. Whenever I listen to it, whenever I’m singing it, I make everyone be quiet for that… 😀

“Because the world is round it turns me on.”
Because has the most amazing vocals ever. One of there best songs ever. lol. It was based on a song by JS Bach. Prelude in C Major from The Well Tempered Clavier.
The harmonies are perfect, timing, everything is PERFECT. One of my favorite Beatles songs. I play it a lot on the piano. If you came over this is what I’d sit down and play for you. LOVE IT !!!!!!
I sure am happy I joined this board. We’ve only just begun…… 🙂

Actually, I think it was based on Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata. I agree, Because is a great song – haunting, I would call it.
5.38pm
I think John’s vocal in A Hard Day’s Night is really amazing… and perhaps underappreciated. There are so many subtleties and so much character and life in his singing. I love how he elongates the syllables in a different word each time he sings the chorus: it’s been a haaaard day’s night, it’s been a hard day’s niiight, it’s bbbbeen A Hard Day’s Night . There are so many other words in the song that have a special little Lennon flair, too… just delicious!

Ha. I thought you were being sarcastic.
Care to expand?
Because is worthy of consideration for best vocal performance because, well, just because.
I recommend a trip over to YouTube to search for Because . There are a number of high school and college a capella groups that have done it. I think when kids discover it they’re bowled over. There’s nothing like it in all of pop music.

Another stunning vocal performance is Paul’s Little Richard turn on Long Tall Sally .
