Ignoring the obvious subjectivity that goes with enjoyment of melody, what are your favourites?
I think Yesterday has the most obviously brilliant melody of the lot, as it goes exactly where your ears want it to and the chord changes seem to follow it rather than the other way around.
Penny Lane , The Fool On The Hill and Here There And Everywhere are great Paul melodies, and Here Comes The Sun is arguably George’s best.
However overall my favourite has to be In My Life .

I love the “whos the lady?” section from Long Haired Lady.
Lovely Rita has an incredibly catchy melody. It really goes off.

I had Lovely Rita stuck in my head today for no particular reason. I don’t think I have to listen to the songs anymore, I have a library in my head. Anyway, I agree, great melody there, I love it.

There are many but the 2 that spring to mind for me are ‘And I Love Her ‘ and ‘Here There And Everywhere ‘.

Interesting. I think the general consensus is that Paul, even if his songs have a tendency to be somewhat silly, had the best ear for melody. John usually had the best lyrics, whilst George is harder to categorise since he’s up there on both fronts yet his significantly smaller output means J&P have the advantage.

I really love the melody and harmonies in If I Fell . It’s a pretty song for sure. There are many others but this one sticks or in my mind right now.

Not written by the Beatles, but How Do You Do It ? is great. No wonder it got GM’s seal of approval.

“But I couldn’t stand the pain” it one of their trickiest harmonies to sing, but it is so fecking beautiful.

I know, it’s crazy. Silly Sis and I used to sing it together , and we’d always do everything fine but fall into agonies over that part. I love it though, one of those mind-blowing Beatleisms.

That’s a pretty great melody. Definitely has some Indian influences, sort of similar to the droning beat on Ticket To Ride .

A figure skating pair in the Olympics (I think South Koreans) this week used an adapted musical version of A Day In The Life for their short program. Maybe I am biased, but it seemed really beautiful in that setting.

I just want to say Something absolutely qualifies as one of their prettiest melodies. It’s perfect. Definitely George’s best song with The Beatles in my opinion.
