Ok, I traversed 18 pages of the 37 pages of topics, and by then I noticed all the last post dates were all 2 years ago. So I think it’s safe to start my first topic, as it doesn’t appear to have been discussed (at least not for at least 2 years
What are your favorite Beatles covers of other artists’ songs? They loved Carl Perkins, and they paid him much homage covering his songs.
I think my favorites are You Really Got A Hold On Me (Robinson), I Got a Woman (Cash), and Glad All Over (Perkins).
These are some others I really like:
My Bonnie – the definitive cover of this song imo (Ray Charles, Tony Sheridan, Dieter Faber) – yes I know technically not a _Beatles_ cover…
Til there was You (Meredith Wilson)
Honey Don’t (Perkins)
That’ll be the Day (Holly)

My personal faves…
“Anna” (Arthur Alexander)
“Words Of Love ” (Buddy Holly)
“Crying, Waiting, Hoping” (Holly)
“Ooh My Soul” (Little Richard)
The medley from Anthology 3
And their goof take of “House of the Rising Sun” that can be found on certain Get Back /Let It Be bootlegs

I’m not big on most of their covers, but my favorite is “A Taste Of Honey .” I’ve always love the Herb Alpert version, and was surprised to discover the song had lyrics.
And even though it’s not a popular choice, I loved “Mr. Moonlight” as a kid, and I’ve still got a soft spot for it.

Thanks. I’ve been told I look like the dad from “Phineas and Ferb,” so in lieu of a real photo of me, I figured that picture would do.

I like in the bbc sessions, set 1 or 2 i think, where they are doing their last pop goes the beatles for the season or whatever, and he asked the boys what they each want to play. each says he wants to dedicate one to the other 3. then they all shout “Twist And Shout of course” and laugh. man those guys were so good at the game…I was thinking Twist And Shout was an original (although I was always suspicious of that assumption, somehow I never got around to checking it out). It definitely would make the #1 cover on my list.

Gotta be Twist And Shout for me, I think. Or perhaps Anna (Go With Him).
Btw, you needn’t have searched through all the pages. All you had to do was type, say, ‘covers’ into the Advanced Search bar, clicked on ‘topics’, and it would’ve brought up any possible matches. Just so you know for future.

Thanks for the heads up Emily. I did try a search, but it brought up way too many results to pore through (it was just a basic search, so it found ever post that had the words “Beatles” and “covers” in it). I’ll definitely use this feature next time I want to start a new topic!

I think my two favorites, insofar as I think they are major improvements over the originals, are “Words Of Love ” (Holly’s version lacks a certain sexy smoothness that is present in droves in the Beatles’ version) and “Rock And Roll Music ” (Berry sounds bored in his version, IMO, and John sounds positively charged).

They gave virtually every song they covered by other artists the respect the songs deserved, and often excelled and exceeded the originals by a considerable margin with their showstopping performances, for me ‘Sweet Little Sixteen’, ‘Roll Over Beethoven ‘ & ‘Please, Mr. Postman’ are standouts, but It’s So Hard to pick a few for there many great ones…:-)

Twist And Shout is always up there for me, I could – and will later – name others.
However, I thought people might find this interesting, though The Beatles covered the Isley Brothers 1962 hit, the Isley Brothers was a cover of The Top Notes 1961 Shake It Up, Baby.

On the rooftop concert, right at the beginning, John muddles the lyrics (as only John can do) of Don’t Let Me Down . I just think it sounds really cool. Part of it is something like “gitchee goomee”.

Aside from A Taste Of Honey and Mr Moonlight i like all the Beatles covers and think they bettered the originals, Anna probably being my fave. I For To Remember To Forget, I Just Don’t Understand and The Honeymoon Song being arguably (with myself) the highlights of the BBC covers. Elvis’s rendition of IFTRTF is such a disappointment.
