Hmm… this is a tough question. Is there one Beatles song that’s better than all of the rest?
If I had to choose 1, it would be The End . It shows each of their individual talents, with John, Paul, and George riffing off each other, and Ringo’s drum solo. Plus, the piano bit at the end with their last message () to their fans…
Great question!

When I see this topic pop up, I am reminded of the conversations we have had through the years about best song vs favorite song. Anyhoo…
We already had this thread so I moved the 3 posts from today that were in another thread to this thread.
If you feel the urge to express more opinions in the “best” category, take a look at these threads: https://www.beatlesbible.com/f…..;include=2

My favorite Beatles song changes everyday. I’d say right now it’s probably I Am The Walrus or Got To Get You Into My Life

I wouldn’t call my favourite (The Word ) their best… so I’d say And Your Bird Can Sing is their best song. Great guitar playing melodic, harmonies, short… Great piece of Bach-inspired music.

To me, there’s really no such thing as the Beatles’ ‘best’ song. There’s no one song that’s better than all the others.
Well, I agree, but…
Hey Bulldog is clearly the best

ˆ I should almost quote you just so I could use the smiley and continue the pattern.
I can’t pick one as their “best.” I love Across The Universe , but a lot of that is personal experience rather the song itself (even though it is amazing and clearly should be everyone’s favorite).

They’re so different though…
Trying to choose one over the other would be extremely awful as they’re both masterpieces. But I think SFF is a better song– just barely.

Strawberry Fields/Penny Lane
To me they are the same song. They have to go together. In that order.
Warning: SF91’s famous Strawberry Fields Forever rant ahead. Proceeding is not advisable if you really like Penny Lane .
Not another one! (I can’t tell you how many people I’ve gotten into arguments with over this). SFF is clearly so many times better it’s impossible to count. I don’t know how people can even put it in the same category as Penny Lane . Penny Lane is happy (that’s the main reason I don’t like it that much); SFF is not. Penny Lane is very nice and nostalgic, but SFF is actually interesting and has depth and makes you think. Those are the three main things I look for in a song. Penny Lane , at best, has only one of them.
Isn't he a bit like you and me?

Hey!
1. There is nothing wrong with happiness.
2. The nostalgia is one of the best parts of the song. Penny Lane without nostalgia = still a pretty good song. Penny Lane with nostalgia = about as good as it gets.

I’d say Penny Lane has all of those things, but that SFF is still better. For me, they work perfectly side by side. They’re like yin and yang.
I've been up on the mountain, and I've seen his wondrous grace,
I've sat there on the barstool and I've looked him in the face.
He seemed a little haggard, but it did not slow him down,
he was humming to the neon of the universal sound.

Not a bad choice at all. For a 2 minute song it really packs in a lot.

I really hate that Penny Lane always has to be compared to Strawberry Fields Forever (and usually to say that it’s not as good).
Can’t it just be a really amazing song? I feel like it’s amazingness is constantly undercut by having to live in Strawberry Fields Forever ‘s shadow.
Considering how different these 2 songs are, which one is actually “better” is completely subjective.

I completely agree with this point, and would like to add that Penny Lane isn’t even completely happy. The verses shift to parallel minor midway which definitely adds a bit of melancholy to the song, enough that I wouldn’t consider this song to be just happy.
Is there a favorite Beatles song thread? I’d much rather contribute my favorite song there, than try to figure out which one is the “best” beyond the obvious answer of A Day In The Life (which is not even close to being my favorite)

I mean, they were released on the same single, so they are pretty much bound to be compared to one another. Plus, they have the similar subject matter of both being about their creator’s childhood.

Okay but how often are Something and Come Together compared? or Day Tripper and We Can Work It Out compared? They are a bit, but nowhere near the level of Strawberry Fields Forever and Penny Lane . Some comparison is natural, but I think it’s gotten totally overkill with these 2.

Well, because neither of those two symbols represent nearly as iconic or momentous a moment in their musical progression as SFF/PL, and because neither represent the different musical personalities of Lennon and McCartney quite as well.

I’m not seeing these comparisons really at all… it’s most often coined as a “Double A-Side”… that would imply that both are so good (I share this notion personally) that one can’t decide which is better… they both are paired alongside each other on the ‘Magical Mystery Tour ‘ album and flow quite nicely together… it’s a nice slice of life during Swinging London where one may venture off to some strawberry fields to watch the flowers grow so incredibly high while others may want to go shop for a new groovy outfit in the city… each belongs amongst their upper echelon of works, in my opinion…:-)

Hey everyone!
I’m new here. And I wanna share with you a list I made of the best Beatles songs in my opinion (ranked from 1 to 50 and considering Golden Slumbers / Carry the Weight/ The End as one song). I ranked them based on melodies, harmonies, rhythm, importance, innovation, uniqueness, lyrics, instrumentation and everything else that involves good songwriting. I tried to be the most unbiased possibly, but of course my personal taste also played a big part in it. I’d be very glad to read your takes on the list, like which songs should be on it, which ones shouldn’t, which songs should be higher or lower etc. So here it is:
The Best Beatles Songs
2. Golden Slumbers / Carry the Weight/ The End
3. While My Guitar Gently Weeps
5. In My Life
7. Something
