They were writing lyrics, which at times worked sans music as poetry. I don’t believe they were saying ‘Let’s write a pretty poem then set it to music’. Lyrics have to stay within the limits of time, rhythm, internal and end rhymes. Their “poems”, if any, were more likely accidents than intentional.
That being said, (whew), they did write some brilliant lyrics which then moved other musicians to grow beyond “Betty Sue has a new pair of shoes…”
I opened a paper on Lennon in Philosophy class with the lyrics of “There’s a Place”. Solid, simple lyrics, adding the sonic sound of the band made a perfect match. Long Long Long is another one…
