So, one day, I was casually listening to the Beatles on YouTube and as I was proceeding through an Abbey Road album playlist, I noticed that the songs were disappearing under my very nose!
As I researched further, it seems that every Beatles’ song was taken down except the music videos on BeatlesVevo.
I was really upset since I just discovered them when that happened, and they weren’t on Spotify yet, so I had no other way of listening to them.
Anyways, do any of you lovely people know or have an idea why they are all copyrighted?
(This is my first thread, and I hope this isn’t a stupid question, or I’ll be writhing in embarressment)

Good question.
Apple have occasionally removed Beatles material through the years from youtube, they own the copyright and have done for decades – the music has always been copyrighted. The reason for the recent more substantial cull is down to the Beatles music being made available to legally stream online and also the release of ‘1’ on DVD.
Welcome to the forum @Evangeline.

I don’t get why they don’t just go and make a profit of YouTube videos with the content ID system instead of removing the videos. It would make them more money.

Because Apple and The Beatles have always been very protective of their image, and how their songs are used, and so now – with their arrival on streaming services, and the updated “1” – they do not want their songs appearing in ways they have not approved. Rather than go through every fan made video to check it meets their high standards for how they want to see themselves portrayed, it is far easier to just ban the lot.

Can’t wait for copyright to run out for Beatles.

Though now that is all banned off YouTube, people will just posts on sites that they can’t profit off of. So it makes things worse for everyone.

I was considering making a thread just like this some time ago, but never got round to it. Thanks @Evangeline!
In recent times I have been able to find Beatles songs on YouTube, though the selection isn’t nearly what it was and lyric videos for all but the most popular are impossible to find.

I’ve had a question about this myself, so I might as well ask it here. I’ve been using YouTube for Beatles music for a while. I noticed that not all of them were off of YouTube. Are the copyrighted videos of Beatles music the ones that still work? I also noticed they didn’t take down many live performances. Are all those copyrighted?

From what I’ve seen, @natureaker, the majority of the survivors are of non-streaming versions, such as versions from Love, and when those start streaming I’d imagine those will also disappear. The few original ’60s releases that are on, that aren’t on their Beatles Vevo channel, seem to be new uploads, which I predict won’t last long. As to the live material, I believe they will allow that to stay up until around the time of the Ron Howard film covering their touring years in order to whet the appetite, and then all that will also come down.

It also relates to content ID catching it or not.
For example, some of my videos failed to alert the system while others did.

When will the Beatles patent run out? Youtube someday will be an archive for all this older music. Just like this forum, it’s how people re-discover it and connect with each other. This is a digital age. I’d like to be able to look up the song Girl and actually get the real version of it.

I think the Beatles music is 75 years from date of release bar anything pre-1963.
Apologies for the 1st post being in moderation for longer than necessary, it was approved as there was nothing wrong with it so no idea why it stayed/returned there.

That sounds like the sort of thing where the rules vary from country to country.

Seems like previously, maybe up to last year, you could go to YouTube, type in a Beatles song name, and up would pop that song by the Beatles from either the original album, or one of the compilation albums, or both and more.
Now, the only songs that come up are covers. So obviously some managerial/business decision was made to restrict original Beatles songs and no longer allow them on YouTube, correct?
My questions are:
Why?
Who did this exactly?
Why didn’t they do it before? Why only now?
(I’ve noticed in the past that the songs of the vast majority of artists out there are in fact available on YouTube — which made the exception of Bob Dylan that much more remarkable. I assumed Dylan early on became very business savvy about the Internet. Similarly, one cannot find hardly any SNL skits on YouTube; apparently Lorne Michaels buttoned that up long ago…)

Beatles got a Vevo and they stream so they didn’t want anyone using their stuff. (It’s not 100% money or they could just monetize the videos)

Can people please move this conversation to the thread that already exists for this subject.
Could I also request that people check if an appropriate thread already exists before creating new threads, or ask questions such as this in the “Miscellaneous Questions…” threads. There was no point to the clean up of the forum conducted by @Joe and the mods if people continue to create new threads without seeing if such a thread already exists. A simple search of thread titles would have shown this topic is already covered.
This thread, as a result, will either be merged (depending on how long Google has had to map it) or locked.
We do not want multiple threads on the same subject, and it would be appreciated if forum members helped avoid this.
Thank you.

I’m glad all the Beatles’ music was available on YouTUbe when I got into them, because that was the only way I had to listen to them for a few months, and I never would have bought all their albums if I hadn’t already heard a lot of their music on YouTube. It doesn’t really bother me they’re not on there anymore, though, because I own all their albums so it really doesn’t effect me. Plus they’re on Spotify now, so people can listen to them through that medium.
