I also nearly choked when I read that post because I was laughing so much. Hilarious!

I would do something about the atrocious non-grammar in Not Guilty . Perhaps ‘Like you heard, I said’; ‘like you heard me say’ would also work, but wouldn’t rhyme.
I might also switch ‘I’m really sorry for your ageing head’ with ‘I’m really sorry for your raging head’, which is how I first heard it and I like it better.

One thing that really annoys me is: “But of all these friends and lovers, There is no one COMPARES with you”It’s COMPARED WAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH
I thought it was ‘there is no one who compares with you’ with the ‘who’ trimmed and left to inference for poetic reasons.

Yes Silly Girl and Zig, that kind of shorthand is quite common in the history of literature and poetry. Also, I get a sense that the omission of the personal pronoun (“who”) is sort of a British thing?

The first thing that comes to mind is the lyric from “I Want To Tell You ” that George himself said he would like to change. He once commented (I think in I Me Mine the book) that if he were to rewrite “But if I seem to act unkind, it’s only me, it’s not my mind that is confusing things,” it would be “But if I seem to act unkind, it isn’t me, it’s just my mind that is confusing things.” That does make more sense.

Same here– I always thought it was a great song except that line, which I sometimes sing the other way to myself. Oh, and welcome to the forum!

“Let this be a sermon I mean everything I’ve said. Baby, I’m determined that I’d rather see you dead” instead of “I’m determined and I’d rather see you dead“. I find that to be far more threatening, a solemn vow from a very nasty John.
“That’s the end ah little girl” – I prefer and always think of it being “That’s the end of little girl“. Again far more venomous and threatening; leaves no room whatsoever for anyone to thing anything other than John is one hell of a sadistic jealous nutter who’s going to kill her if she messes him about.
I really love this song and it makes me laugh when folk say they dont because of the lyrics.

You mean the lyrics are not “that’s the end of little girl”? I always sing it like that…
And I also love the song. I love Maxwell’s Silver Hammer for basically the same reason: those dark lyrics accompanied by such an upbeat melody… I love that! Anyone thinking of something like that must have a wicked sense of humour (or be a dangerous psychopath…)

I’ve always heard it as “that’s the end of little girl” @Beatlebug but the lyric sits say “ah”. When listening to the song it could be either but the isolated vocals (contained in spoiler) do sound like “that’s the end, ah, little girl”.

I always heard that sound as a heavy emphasis on the d on the word end.

That could be it. It could still mean ‘of’, too. You know, like ‘kind of’ gets pronounced as ‘kinda’. Alas, I think we’ll never know; it’s not like we can ask John 🙁 Eithe way, it’s a really strong tune IMO.

Same. Those lyric sites are populated by fans, not the lyrics publishers. They only enter in what they hear…just like us, I suppose.
