Hey Dullblog posted this today:
Discovered! Another bad Beatles lyric
We’ve discussed in these virtual pages the dire quality of that couplet in “She’s A Woman ” (you know the one), and the let’s-sneak-this-in-and-move-on line in “While My Guitar Gently Weeps ” (“I look at my floor and I see it needs…sweeping”)…
This morning, I was enjoying “Baby’s In Black ” and was struck by:
I think of her but she thinks only of him,
and though it’s only a whim,
she thinks of him.
It’s only a whim! A whim!!!
Can you think of any other that make you laugh or cringe?
On Friday, “Do You Want To Know A Secret ” came up on my playlist with the lyric “just we two.” Maybe it’s a reference to this song, but it always stops the song for me.
(BTW, I did a search and I didn’t see a similar topic. But I’ll delete if there is one.)

Oh yes, that line in Do You Want To Know A Secret has always bothered me too!
Don’t know if it’s ”bad lyrics”, but this bit in If I Needed Someone has always annoyed me:
”Had you come some other day
Then it might not have been like this”
Why not ”It might not have been this way”?! Or something like that.

Not sure if this counts are not but I’ve never liked the La La Las in You Won’t See Me . As for Do You Want To Know A Secret , I find the “just we two” fine, it sounds different, and didn’t they want to be different?

I wonder that too. Guess George was just trying for an off-kilter twist.

I love the “la la las” in You Won’t See Me . They’re almost comical, which I think was part of the intention.

Maybe its because of the line up with another la la la song after that. Because Nowhere Man is obviously the superior of the two.

I know that Ian MacDonald slated You Wont See Me in Revolution in the Head because of its placement besides Nowhere Man but ive always prefered it. Nowhere Man seems to go on too long for me, till the point im getting restless by the end, whereas ive never got bored of YWSM which is my ringtone.

I like Nowhere Man more, but it DOES seem to go on for aaaaages, while it’s not even 3 minutes long.

I’m expanding this thread to include Beatles solo if only because I have to get this out of my system… :-> From Paul’s “See Your Sunshine”:
She makes me feel glad
I want her so bad
My heart is beating mad…ly for her
Not enough irony in the world to make me not want to punch a wall.

Found it amusing that there’s a thread on Paul’s “cringe-inducing lyrics” at the Maccaboard.

Yeah, “presents/peasant” gets a lot of ridicule but the sheer absurdity of using such an archaic word always amused me. Also, the way Paul sings it is great.
“Love Me Do ” I think is pretty much the worst. But “Eight Days A Week ” is almost as bad, with more of those lazy you/too/true rhymes. Really unfortunate, since musically that song is so appealing.

Love Me Do consists of only 20 different words: love, me, do, you, know, I, I’ll, always, be, true, so, whoa, oh, someone, to, somebody, new, like, please, yeah. Not exactly Shakespeare. However, Why Don’t We Do It In the Road and You Know My Name (Look Up the Number) put it to shame, and Wild Honey Pie trumps them all.
Don't you know? It's gonna be alright. (Shoo-bee-doo-wop)

Can ”whoa” and ”oh” even be considered as words though?
Linde, I was thinking the same thing. Glad you raised the point!

You Know My Name is so obviously meant to be ludicrous I can’t lump it in with bad Beatles lyrics. And it being one of my favorite songs, I give it a pass.

You Know My Name (Look Up The Number) is such a good song which isn’t meant to be lyrically great. Its a deliberately fun song as heard when played, totally different to most of what has been previously mentioned.
