I’m not a fan of the song. I always felt the solo fit the song.

Like @Ahhh Girl I think there is an element of “selling” in John’s delivery, almost if he’s annoyed he has to point something so simple out that people keep ignoring, but it’s also a side-effect of the cadence of the verses, that downward progression in a stumbling 7/4 with John fitting words in between rapid-fire, and even the strings start sounding bored with it. Then the bounce and lift of those choruses are just heavenly, with a jaunty little riff to punctuate the words. Eric Idle pointed out that people had to wait 2 whole hours of the original broadcast to hear this, he said it was awful stuff to wait through for this one piece of TV magic.
As a child I did far worse with a viola over weeks than a plunk from George in a backing track.

I was just listening to this song today and was really blown away by how much Paul’s bass playing makes this song. Most Beatles fans have a favorite Beatle, but there’s no denying that they would be not nearly as great a group if any one of the four members were subtracted.

Yeah the bass is crucial to the feeling of the chorus, its almost hilarious in its groovyness and really expresses Paul’s personality at that moment. What Paul does musically with the others’ songs seems to be really free in a way his own compositions often aren’t so I treasure them. It sounds really weird to say so, it’s just the feeling I get from his playing and singing.

So I just bought this book, Recording Unhinged: Creative & Unconventional Music Recording Techniques, and it is spattered with little commentaries by people in the industry. In one written by someone who had worked with John during Walls And Bridges , there was an interesting revelation. They asked John if there was a Mellotron on the song to which he replied:
“No, man, its’s the London Philharmonic Orchestra! Are you kidding? But I will tell you that there are no drums on that song…it’s actually one of The Beatles holding an upright bass by the neck, squeezing the neck with the strings, and Ringo hitting the strings with drumsticks while someone else was shaking a tambourine.”
Earlier in the book someone had said John told them there was no bass on Lady Madonna , and that it was just the low E on a guitar EQ’ed to sound like a bass. I believed that when I read it, but as soon as I read the no drums statement above, I began to doubt them both. I breifly thought it possible that John may have been irritated by Beatles questions and made things up for his amusment. I mean, there’s a drum roll to kick the song off, it was a crazy claim! But that was overdubbed after as I recall and Joe’s article confirmed. I went and listened to the track and lo and behold, there’s a strange percussion sound that has a hollow, woody tone. Like someone smacking a hollow instrument with a drumstick.
Easily audible from 0:15-0:17 in the left channel!
I went to confirm this with video footage, and about halfway through you can clearly see Ringo at his drum kit, however there’s his snare sitting all by it’s lonesome to his right while he bangs on something you can’t see over to his left. Obviously, there are some drums on the track in the beginning, and it couldn’t have been a Beatle holding down the strings like it was said John said (they were busy making history), but it’s fairly apparent the main rhythmic backing is not what you might’ve thought!
Why? Because The Beatles were The Beatles and they did what they wanted. And if that meant beating up a double bass, or playing the violin and a short solo (that I believe both perfectly fit the song ) so be it!

I found this interesting and thought I’d share. Who exactly sings the “she loves you yeah yeah yeah” at the end of All You Need Is Love ?
I personally always heard it as pure John, but the video shows how it’s a mix of John and Paul!
I think it's great you're going through a phase,

When you put the statement All You Need Is Love into the context of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, does it end up sounding ludicrous? Thoughts? Comments?
What got me off on this rabbit hole was seeing someone wearing a t-shirt with the statement All You Need Is Coffee.

Suppose that the feelings of love would be placed in the self-fulfillment section, then yes All You Need Is Love , I suppose.
Side note: I always thought that the outro to “All You Need Is Love ” is sung by Paul, as Paul was the main vocalist on the original song. However, I can understand why some would consider it to be John’s singing as well.

I came here to post this video. It’s really good! I have actually asked myself this question, and gone and looked at the video a couple of times to see if I could figure it out. How did I miss Paul’s mic getting knocked?!?

Great video – very interesting information.
Generally excellent commentary, except that the commentator refers to Brian Epstein’s death as a suicide. That’s possible but not definite; at the statutory inquest Brian’s death was officially ruled an accident, caused by a gradual buildup of Carbrital combined with alcohol in his system.
