Recently, I was listening to MMT (as I usually do on Wendsdays) and the last song All You Need Is Love played eventually. Might I note that it’s a lovely song, I like it very much, as it is very pleasant and definitely fun to listen to. One of my favorite parts of YS was the part with this song featuring. Anyways, I was listening to this fantastic finale, when I noticed that towards the end of the song, I heard very, very familiar lyrics: “We’re Sgt. Pepper ’s lone-ly hearts club band!” I was a bit confused, because the last time I checked, I was listening to Magical Mystery Tour . Then I realized it was one of those fun little cross-references in Beatles songs. Pretty interesting, eh? Usually those nice little references are a bit more subtle, rather than a direct repeat of lyrics. But, still a nice feature! Another strange thing I noticed was that at the very end, the ending from Good Night plays, along with a short message from John. What confuses me is that Good Night is a song from a 1968 album, and All You Need Is Love is from 1967.
Reporter: Beethoven figures in one of your songs. What do you think of Beethoven?
Ringo Starr: He’s great. Especially his poetry.

I’m sorry but… what???
There is no reference to Sgt. Pepper in All You Need Is Love . The only reference to an earlier Beatles song is the chorus of She Loves You . Nor do I hear “…at the very end, the ending from Good Night plays, along with a short message from John…”
I listened anew, and I still can’t hear them.
Could you give the timings for the things you’re referring to…

You’re right and wrong….Right about there not being a reference to Sgt Pepper but wrong in that I’m positive I recall a reference to another Beatles song, namely ‘Yesterday ‘ so ‘She Loves You ‘ is not the sole Beatles’ song referenced…..You could argue that so too is, ‘Altogether Now’ which was recorded in May 67 before AYNIL….but not released. Maybe Paul was plugging it?? …..Mind you who cares except us addicts?

@silverhammerYT I think you’re thinking about the version on Love, which is a mashup album released only 12 years ago. The mono single nor the stereo mix heard on Yellow Submarine features these references.

Yeah, it sounds like some kind of remix version to me. Though there are certainly song references in All You Need Is Love : She Loves You and All Together Now .

I believe it may have just been the version I was listening to. My cell phone has temporarily stopped working, so I’ve been listening to music on a ringtone website. I’ve got to find ways to adapt haven’t I?

Thanks for the audio. That’s the Love remix from 2006. The short message from John is from the 1966 Christmas EP.
To keep this thread going, where are these references to Yesterday , I’ve heard people talk about it but don’t hear it in the finished song.

There is a phrase at 3:13, @Dark Overlord, that some hear as “Yesterday “. Myself, I hear John saying, “Yes, you can!”

I could also point out that there are those who believe the calls of “All together now!” are references to the Paul song of the same name, and his probable entry into the “song for the world” competition, whereas I just hear an encouragement for the assembled ensemble to sing along vigorously.
Sorry!!!
Which is why I say the only song reference is She Loves You .

I agree that Paul’s encouragement was probably just that and not an intended reference; however, I do count it as a reference because it fits my personal definition of reference. That’s just me though; feel free to ignore everything I have said.
I’ll go back to my corner now.

‘All Together Now ‘ was recorded in the May….. so just before AYNIL. I also, (like nasty) read somewhere that he wanted it considered for the world broadcast…….It would fit in some ways. And in some ways it might demonstrate that there was a discussion amongst themselves that a song for the world called for nursery rhyme simplicity. I’m not sure if AYNIL was John’s first use of ‘Three Blind Mice’ but he would use it in other songs like ‘Instant Karma ‘. If the melody of AYNIL is a ‘shallow’ ‘nursery one’ the lyrics are hippie deep…….I recall Paul once saying, he never knew what John was on about…..
Certainly Paul’s, ‘all together now….everybody’ always sounded like simple encouragement to me……..but it might have been a clever reference slipped in, a little dig and joke to get John to laugh.
Paul certainly won all the A side battles from then on up to the split.
Bless their brotherly competition….. Whatever came later they loved each other.

Love, love, love
Love, love, love
Nothing you can sing that can’t be sung
Nothing you can say, but you can learn how to play the game
It’s easy
Nothing you can make that can’t be made
No one you can save that can’t be saved
Nothing you can do, but you can learn how to be you in time
It’s easy
Nothing you can see that isn’t shown
There’s nowhere you can be that isn’t where you’re meant to be
It’s easy
All You Need Is Love , love, love is all you need
All You Need Is Love (All together now)
All You Need Is Love (Everybody)
All You Need Is Love , love, love is all you need
Love is all you need
Love is all you need
Love is all you need
Love is all you need
Love is all you need
Love is all you need
Love is all you need
Love is all you need
Love is all you need
Love is all you need

Well I broke out the multitracks to see if I could shed some light – I’ve always heard it as ‘yes you can’
But upon listening to the multitrack, I’ve been converted to ‘yesterday’…
