Fab 4 Free 4 All did a podcast this week delving into the meaning behind Eleanor Rigby .  One of the more interesting interpretations was  that Eleanor was inspired by the prostitutes Paul would have come to know in Hamburg….

Waits at the window, wearing the face that she keeps in a jar by the door… Who is it for?

The red light district where the boys played had the infamous brothels where the prostitutes would stand behind a window like… Well… Like any other store front window I guess.  She is a lonely prostitute putting on her best face for who ever may be next.  By day she seeks salvation but old father mckenzie, himself desperately alone, fails to take notice. She dies, he simply wipes away the dirt from her grave and she is forgotten… No one was saved.

Anyway… Thought it interesting. What say you?  What’s this piece of poetry truly mean?  If anything in particular.

Hmm… interesting interpretation. I always thought it was simply a story about a lonely woman who died alone and was forgotten, and Father McKenzie was just another lonely person. I mean, if you think about it, this “lonely people” story may seem simple at first, but it’s coming from a mere 24-year old. Paul was wise beyond his years.

Also known as Egg-Rock, Egg-Roll, E-George, Eggy, Ravioli, Eggroll Eggrolli...

24… Wow.  You’re right.  It’s amazing that he had that depth at that age.  Of course they’d lived a lifetime by them, hadn’t they?

Wasn’t the “Ah, look at all the lonely people” part George?

I recall in about 1973, standing at a dreary busy corner in a grey American city, all these white people waiting for the bus; then these two young black guys strutted by, and I was amazed at what they sang:  “Ahh, look at all the lonely people….” !

I don’t think I’ve ever heard it, but I don’t have a great deal of time to listen to podcasts or watch clips. I’ve heard good things about it though. Anyway, I’ve turned down all TV/radio appearance I’ve been offered (not loads – probably fewer than 10 since I started this) – it’s not something that interests me.
