Just a slight correction, @The Hole Got Fixed, Harry Moss was responsible for the tone, as it wasn’t done until the master disc was cut. GM just included it among his instructions, along with things like “No rills”.

I’m not quite sure if it’s what you’re referring to @Lawernce, but there is a squeaking chair heard at 4:47. If that’s not the sound you’re referring to, could you give a time reference so we know where to look?
I can’t give you an exact timestamp but if you have ever come across the 4 track bootlegs the guitar track while Mel Evans counts during the final orchestra crescendo as he counts louder you can hear that sound it’s toward the end of the song

Was it the part I isolated in the above video? If not, I have absolutely no idea where it is in the song…

I don’t know. It kind of sounds like a kazoo or a harmonica, but I’m stumped on that one…
reading from more sources im thinking it could be feed back due to the echo like when you put a mic to close to a speaker.
another theory could be the alarm clock at such a high echo.

Is the squeaking shoe the same as the squeaking chair?
From and Ultimate Classic Rock article
Sessions for the Beatles’ “A Day In The Life ” were complicated enough as it was. After all, the album-closing track on 1967’s Sgt. Pepper ‘s Lonely Hearts Club Band married two musical ideas from John Lennon and Paul McCartney ; the song was later completed with a sprawling 40-piece orchestral performance. Then Ringo Starr inadvertently made things way more interesting.
“On one of the overdubs, Ringo shifted position very slightly at the very end, causing his shoe to squeak,” engineer Geoff Emerick wrote in Here, There And Everywhere . “This happened, of course, just when the sound of a pin dropping could be heard! A cross Paul shot him a sideways glance, and from the look on his face, I could tell Ringo was mortified. If you listen quite closely to the song just as the sound is fading away, you can hear it clearly, especially on the CD version, where there is no surface noise to mask it.”

Yep, exactly the same thing, @Ahhh Girl.
It’s one of those where Emerick says one thing in his book, and everybody else says something else.
As Joe says in his article:
Geoff Emerick was in charge of recording the instruments. To capture every last droplet of sound – including the rustling of paper and a squeaking chair – he used heavy compression and careful manipulation of the faders.
Emerick isn’t always the most reliable of witnesses.

Thanks, RN.
Do we know if the rest of that story is on target: Paul shooting Ringo a look and Ringo cringed?

Something I have often wondered is, obviously ADITL started off as a ‘John song’, so was he not able to come up with something to complete it, or did he play what he had to Paul, and Paul told him that he had an idea for the middle, or would come up with an idea?!
Did John then just sit back and wait for Paul to come up with something, rather than trying to come up with a ‘middle 8’ himself?
I know John added bits to ‘Paul songs’ on Sgt. Pepper … ‘Getting Better ‘ and ‘She’s Leaving Home ‘ for example … so obviously they were still working together by this stage.
I’m just curious why John didn’t try to finish it himself? I think Paul being involved really elevated the song musically though.

I figure he was having trouble making it complete, and Paul helped him out.

‘A Day In The Life ’ – that was something. I dug it. It was a good piece of work between Paul and me. I had the ‘I read the news today’ bit, and it turned Paul on. Now And Then we really turn each other on with a bit of song, and he just said ‘yeah’ – bang, bang, like that. It just sort of happened beautifully.
Here is a quote from John about the song taken from Joe’s article

An amusing and at times interesting video by a young guy, looks like he’s in his 20s, who has never heard a Beatles song before, and he’s listening to and dissecting A Day In The Life —
