There’s really no point in arguing this… Sgt. Pepper was the height of the Beatles’ collaboration and teamwork, John/Paul grudges had not been formed yet, and it looked like The Beatles would last forever and their love would ultimately save the world as well as deliver countless songs for everyone to enjoy. The bubble burst the next year, and The Beatles became mostly a one-man-for-himself band, unfortunately, and the grudges took over. Now there is a civil war between John and Paul and suddenly every contribution from one onto the other’s song (especially vocal) becomes a territorial battle.
I have always thought it was John because it just made sense that he sings a “lullaby” to Paul. If Paul sang it, I really wouldn’t be surprised because he had the vocal range to comfortably hit the notes with all of the sustain (not that John couldn’t either). Also, he could easily have altered his voice to sound more like John’s (how many different voices did Paul have?). It’s very possible that both did, but I haven’t listened closely enough to tell if there is more than one voice.
My point is that it does not matter who sang it (as long as it was a Beatle). Sgt. Pepper was the last true Beatle album, and we really do it a disservice by starting fights that don’t belong in the context.
All I was looking for was somebody who looked like you... with money!

It’s John. It’s obviously John. It sounds like John and noone else. I didn’t realize that anybody would even debate this before this forum.

I dont mind the discussion going ahead (well i do, i have deep-rooted traumas attached to this thread) but can we please please keep it polite, friendly and peaceful when expressing opinion. Outside of Yoko this is one topic that for some reason causes raging arguments.

I think there was another thread about Paul vs George on bass I think that became heated.
If you can't log in and can't use the forum go here and someone will help you out.

Yip. I think thats the thread which ended with argument over charts and what you take from them – i think ‘Michelle ‘ (the song) was part of it. There have been a few.

I still take issue with the word “obvious” here! I myself was one who listened to the isolated vocal track with skepticism, positive that it would only confirm my belief that it was John. It did not. The more I listened, the more it sounded like Paul; until it began to sound like the two of them alternating “ahh”s. Now I’m resigned to the fact of my ignorance. Anybody else can believe what they wish.
Paul: Yeah well… first of all, we’re bringing out a ‘Stamp Out Detroit’ campaign.

Hi everybody, it’s Michael, or, as most of you know me, paulsbass.
Hopefully just a short return since I don’t want to go through all of this again, nor do YOU want this, I guess…
First let me say sorry for the messy way I ended my long membership of the BB-forum, taking all my posts with me. I was VERY frustrated with the way people who didn’t know me AT ALL received my postings (hello ivejustseenherfaceo) or all the criticism I ALONE seemed to receive for this discussion – while it was very often very clearly the OTHER side who added aggression and heat (can’t list them all correctly).
I NEVER wanted this controversy, and apart from saying “Nope, it’s Paul” a few times too often I really can’t see any major mistakes from my part here. I got stoned for being “unreasonable” because I wouldn’t even “settle for a compromise”, being “Paul AND John singing”. Sorry, but why would I settle on that? Beatle fans of all people should know the sound of a double-tracked or doubled voice. The part in question is NOT doubled. And I didn’t see how it was my mistake I was outnumbered in my opinion on this forum.
So I left, because I realized this place which I joined in high spirits so many years ago, thrilled by the idea of FINALLY being able to discuss my favourite band with other fanatics, had turned for me into a place which made me feel bad about myself and, even worse: Bad about the Beatles. Til this day I’m unable to enjoy one my favourite songs because of all the spite and venom I got from some people who – again – don’t know me at all but still dare to judge me.
I know it’s just the internet, and the day you start caring about Youtube- or Facebook-comments is a really bad one for you – still, after giving so much input that was often very much appreciated it hurt me to be turned into THE supervillain here – disregarding for example the very disturbing behaviour of one of my “infamous” discussion “foes” Mr. Big (ironically another German! I guess a lot of the controversy was caused just by bad grammar…), as if it was MY fault someone would consider George Harrison a better bass player than Paul, and vehemently so…
Anyway, I left, after talking things over with Joe. There’s not a drop of bad blood there, for which I’m really grateful.
Sooo, long story short, why did I re-register, something I REALLY didn’t want to do?
I tried very hard for the last year to get in contact withy anyone who is Paul or around him to get some “final statement” on the question.
That wasn’t successful, but then I stumbled over this brilliant website “The Beatles Rarity” which I can highly recommend, even for BB-fans who are already quite well educated, thanks to Joe and his amazing work.
THE guy there is “Happy Nat” and he has an “ask Nat” section where you are allowed to post any Beatle-related question. You might quess what my question was…
Thankfully, after some time he came up with his take on the problem, and while it’s not THE definitive “I told you so” Paul-statement that would shut up all doubts it’s still a very nice sum-up of all the quotes and facts and it has the isolated vocals – AND Nat agrees with me, that these isolated vocals SHOULD end all discussions…
http://www.thebeatlesrarity.co…..n-the-life
Well, as Nat expected, he didn’t acchieve that, since it still depends on what you WANT to hear and we STILL don’t have THAT final statement.
Anyway, I just wanted to take the chance to say “goodbye” a little more elaborately – and sorry for the controversy.
I STILL don’t get why we have this discussion anyway!! 😉
Peace.
Hi Michael. I’m glad to see you here again, though slightly less glad to see this thread brought back to life!
Everything in the past is water under the bridge as far as I’m concerned. As you say, there’s no bad blood here.
Onto this subject, though. I’m glad that you and Happy Nat (Mark) found consensus. I disagree, however, when Mark says his audio sample “should put the debate completely to rest”, “Paul’s is without a doubt the more prominent [voice]” and that “his part is indisputable”. It remains subjective, whichever way you cut it. Subjective is all well and good, but it should never be confused with empirical evidence.
I STILL don’t get why we have this discussion anyway!! ??
Me neither, so let’s not.
This subject will never have a resolution unless a) we get a definitive answer from someone who was there, or b) I force a resolution. To that end I’m locking this thread. If any new information emerges it can be opened up again, but opinions are not data.
Any new threads on this subject may be moved into this one, but the thread will remain locked until further notice.
Michael, please stay on the forum if you want to. Everyone’s welcome as long as they’re nice to one another. Just let’s not discuss this subject, please…
Peace and love.

I know this dumpster fire of a thread is locked, but here’s some clarity from Sir Paul McCartney himself:
I seem to remember we all sang it. But I was definitely in there.
